    First Partial Boil

Howdy! I'm 4 batches into the hobby. All of which were outdoor propane full 5 gal boils. I want to get some more beer started and its still a bit cold to be sitting outside doing this... I picked up a couple of "True Brew" kits at a new local home brew shop. Their instructions...

Looking for a bit more hops...

My first batch is done. It turned out great. I am very happy with it. If I could change anything I would want a bit more hops in the final flavor. At what stage do I do that? Add more to the boil? Add hops and use a secondary fermentation? (so far I have only done 4 week primary...

    1st Batch - Results

On Sunday I drove home from an out of state trip (5hrs) and raced downstairs to grab my first finished homebrew out of the beer fridge and see if all the work had paid off... It did. :mug: :ban: And there was much rejoicing. :fro: I want to thank Revy and all of the others who...

    Foamy Wort Going Into Fermenter

Did our third batch last night... A newcastle brown style brown ale. We've done a red and an amber before this, both were liquid malt, this one was DME. Anyway, after cooling the wort we poured it back and forth thru the strainer a few times to get out some gunk and aerate it. Also...

3rd batch ever. Unsure about yeast starter...

So I smacked the smackpack. It wasnt ballooning up like the 1st one did... Package said it didnt need toi expand all the way. Manufacture date on it is June 2010. It also said older yeasts take longer... 3 hours go by, not much expansion at all. I made the starter wort in the flask...

    Bottling From The Spigot?

Question: What are you guys' preference when it comes time to bottle? Right from the spigot into the bottles? Or something else? And if something else, what? And why?

Batch #2... Forgot to check for airlock activity.

Until the 48hr mark. Nothing going on. Should I just leave it? Or open it up and look? And if I look, what am I looking for?

    Fermentation Temp

I have my first batch, an irish red ale, in the fermenter. Its been in there for 7 days. I checked it the day after boiling and the airlock was bubbling along nicely. Since then I have looked in the closet at the bucket (havent opened it, no reason to) about every 2 days. Just to see that it...

Chilling the wort. A few questions.

The book I have (How to Brew, by Palmer) says that ideally the wort should be cooled to the temp it will ferment at. (65-75 degrees Farenheit) In you guys history, is this possible using a garden hose and copper tubing submersion wort chiller? And while using the wort chiller, as it seems its...

    Racking To Secondary Question

When siphoning to secondary fermenter. Is it correct to leave behind all sediment?

Question about pouring the wort into the fermenter

I did my first batch last night and a question came up today... When pouring the wort into the fermenter, how critical is it to strain out anything in the bottom of the kettle? Assuming you used a muslin bag for steeping the grains and just tossed the 2 portions of hops right into the wort.

Propane - how much on a tank?

How many 5 gal boils can I expect on a standard grill sized propane tank? I'm using a bayou classic turkey fryer...

Wyeast - 48 hrs till brew day

I broke the inner packet 48 hrs prior to brew day. Put it in a 70-75 degree place and went to bed. The next morning I checked it and its puffed up nicely. I have 36 hrs to go till brew day. I can just leave it be? Is there any danger in it expanding and breaking? Thanks for the...

    Hydrometer Reading From A Carboy

How is this done? Remove the rubber stopper/airlock, then what? How can I get down in there to read anything?

    Starting Gravity... what if?

My first brew day is approaching. I feel good. Been doing lots of research, reading, prepping, etc. One question I have on starting gravity... What if its off? Why would it be off and what can I do to correct it?

    Water - from the tap

Our tap water is pretty good. So I'll be using that for brewing. I have gathered that the water I'll be adding to top off to 5 gal should be pre-boiled to make sure its not harboring "nasties". I guess I'll boil up 3-4 gallons prior to boiling the wort and store it in the bottling...

    Boiling outdoors... then what?

Once the boil is done I understand we need to chill the wort to get it down in temp quickly. Question: At what point do I need to move everything indoors? I'm assuming that the outdoor air isn't good when we are so worried about things getting into the wort. But we aren't to aerate...

    Prepping Gear For FIrst Brew

Besides sanitizing, is there anything I need to do to prep my gear for the first brew? Do I need to boil a batch of water in my aluminum stock pot before doing a brew in it? What about my wort chiller? (copper) is anything needed there? Just dunk it in the sanitizing bucket and bam, into...

    Sanitizing Your Gear

So I got all my stuff ordered and its arrived. I'm getting ready to do my first brew. I want to buy some storage tubs for everything and I had a question about sanitizing. I was thinking of getting an extra couple of tubs to do the sanitizing in. I have only used sanitizing solution...

Temps - Boil and wort chilling

I am getting ready to do my first brew. Question. The 155 degree temp when boiling and the under 90 temp for cooling the wort... How is this measured? Meaning, how do you all recommend doing it? My kit came with a stick on tape like thermometer.. I dont see how I can use this for...
