Water profile for Robert the Bruce ?

What water profile would you use for Robert the Bruce, all grain? A Scottish ale, but made in the USA. Edinburg, Scotland, or a lower calcium/sulfate/bicarbonate local water profile? I am planning on making this this weekend.

Ever make a beer you don't quite like?

I made a beer, has this sweetly background taste that won't go away, so I searched and found this solution: Turn your beer into bread: Oat Beer Bread  2 cups all‐purpose flour  1 1/4 cups rolled oats  1 tablespoon baking powder  1 teaspoon salt  1...

    Cooler conversion

I decided to switch to All Grain. I bought a new cooler, and after 15 minutes of cutting, hacking, yanking, busting my fingers, .... I managed to cut the old valve off the cooler. Upon examining the old valve pieces, I discovered it is threaded and just screws off. DOHH !!! :drunk:

steep and partial mashing - the starches?

I understand the different processes of steeping and partial mashing, so a question: When you steep, and you get starches (instead of sugar when mashing) - what happens to the starches? Do the starches remain unfermented and end up giving flavor to the ale? Some of my steeped beers have a...

cara-pils vs flaked wheat vs flaked oats

These all appear to increase body and head retention. If you were designing a brown ale, which is the best choice? - or is it just a matter of personal taste? If you had 3 identical brown ales, but used these 3 items, could you tell the difference?

    HomeBrewTalk.com

This is a great group. After leaning to brew for the last 5 months, I learned so much here, - so I bought a membership. :ban: Well worth it. I probably would have given up if not for HBT. The only downfall is that I can no longer drink commercial beer. I drink my homebrew down to the...

Can you squeeze the flaked corn out when finished steeping it? It has soaked up over 60% of my water.

    Smack Pack - dead?

My smack pack did not swell in 12 hours. Maybe 10-25% max. It could possibly have frozen during the trip, but not sure. It was sent by mail. The date on the pack is 1 month ago. I will make a starter, can anyone provide any tips? Mr Malty says to use 3 liters of water, so I'll put in 1.5...

    Radio show joke

Read it and you'll see why! Just imagine sitting in traffic on your way to work and hearing this. Many NFLD folks DID hear this on the 94.7- OZ - FM morning show in St. John's NFLD. The DJs play a game where they award winners great prizes. The game is called "Mate Match". The DJs call...

Taste: Green Apple or Vinegar ?

I can't tell what the taste of my beer is: It's either Green Apple or vinegar-ish, kind of both I think. It's sour, but I can drink it without spitting it out. I know green apple taste means keep it and age it, and vinegar means dump it due to a bacteria. But I can't figure out the taste. It...

    2 ounces of Tomahawk

Is 2 ounces of Tomahawk too much at 60 minutes? OG: 1.066 making IPA Beersmith shows 2 oz contributes 27 IBU Tinseth which is my target, but Rager puts IBU at 67 IBU - which is way too much. Doing a full boil with LME. Tinseth vs Rager scales have me confused

    designing beer question

I see when you add the hops at the end of the boil, they are for flavor and aroma, but what about the bittering hops at the first of the boil - do these bittering hops give taste, or only bitterness? What does it matter if you add warrior or centenial or columbus hops for the bittering at...

    Diversol Blues

I didn't rinse my fermenter properly after using Diversol. I did rinse, but certainly not properly. I see others also fell into this trap. Hmmmmm, I wonder what will happen.... After doing some armchair research, lets look at some numbers (these are rough numbers, so do your own...

    Consecutive low OG readings

My first batch was a kit, and my OG ws dead on. so my hydrometer appears to be tuned in. However my next two - real reciepes - the LME was supplied locally, and my OG was about 8% low both times. I followed the reciepe exactly and final volume was 5 gallons. Can LME concentration vary...

    Cold conditioning bottled beer

I drank my first brewed beer Friday. It was in the bottle 3 weeks, then in the fridge 48 hours. The 500 milli-liter bottle was so perfect, a real beer, no sign of green. However, the larger 1 liter bottle, was still slightly green. My thoughts are that the larger 1L bottle took longer to...

    !!!!!!!! Wow !!!!!

YUM-YUM. my first homebrew down the hatch. So crisp, so fresh. It was a cream ale kit. 4 days in primary, 17 days in secondary, aged 3 weeks in bottle, 2 days cold conditioned. I can't wait for my next batch to be ready, a real home cooked brew, made better with what I learned here. No...

    IBU tune in

As a new brewer, I have no idea of how to tune in my IBU's. I have no idea of 20, 40, 60, 80. I don't know what I like or where to start for bitterness. For now, I am going to brew a 20 IBU IPA and also a 40 IBU IPA to see which way I want to go. For home, I'd like a low IBU sipping beer...
