    Celebration clone with WY1318

I’m thinking of doing this for my next batch. It will obviously make a somewhat different beer. I’m thinking the body and the hops presence will both be a little softer and not as classic west coasty as with the Chico yeast. That being said, I’ve not used the 1318 before so maybe I’m off base on...

Which hop would you swap out for Mosaic?

I brewed a hoppy session ale this past summer that was great and I used Centennial, Simcoe, and Amarillo in equal amounts at 20, 10, 0, and dry hop. I'm bumping up the recipe to be a more proper American IPA and I've got a pound of Mosaic on the way and would like to use some of it. Which hop do...

Using mash tun pre-heat water for spare?

Hi, Part of my process is that I boil a couple gallons of water to warm up my mash tun before I dump in the grains and get the mash going. Is there any reason to not use the boiled "warm up" water as sparge water? Thanks!

    2014 SN Celebration

Does anyone, besides me, feel like the Celebration is different this year? Just doesn't taste right to me. I've had it out of the bottle and on tap and it's just not as fresh or piney as usual.

FT: Radical Brewing by Randy Mosher

Hey, I hope it's okay to post this here. Since it isn't beeri didn't think it proper for the trade forum. Anyhoo, I have an extra copy of Radical Brewing. Anyone want to trade something for it? I would love to get For The Love Of Hops, the new water book, or Mitch Steele's IPA book. Let me...

    Charleston, SC area bar/brewery recommendations?

Hey folks, We're in the Charleston area for the week and would like to know some good places to hit. Not too interested in bottle shops, just establishments that are either a good brewery or a bar with a good beer selection. Been loving getting Sweetwater's stuff down here! And we're staying...

    American Brown Ale recipe, thoughts?

Hello, I'm planning to brew this one soon. My hope is that it will turnout something similar to Bear Republic's Peter Brown Tribute Ale. The only info they give on the website is IBUs 21, ABV 6.3%, that it's brewed with molasses and brown sugar, and the hops are Centennial and Cascade. I plan...

Rant - What the frig is up with overpriced pints at the brewpub?

So a small brewery, I think he's just 2bbl capacity, just recently opened in a town near me and he's charging $7 for a pint of his 6.5% IPA and doesn't even list the IBUs on the menu! What the heck man?!?! Did a unicorn puke a rainbow colored leprechaun into it or something? No thanks! I would...

Growing hops in Virginia - 2013

All of my C hops (Cascade, Centennial, Chinook, & Columbus) have numerous healthy looking bines-to-be poking their heads through the soil. Woohoo! Must be spring finally! Do you think it's too late to dig them and trim the crowns? I'd like to keep any runners in check. My other 2 plants...

    2013 Nugget Nectar

Anyone else think it's not as good as it has been in past years? Seems really sweet to me and not hoppy enough to balance it out. My wife loves it, which surprises me bc she usually goes for the dry, hoppy IPAs. Thoughts?

    stick blender for whirlpool?

Has anyone successfully used a stick blender to start their whirlpool? I was blending a soup the other day and happened to create a heck of a whirlpool. This was much less volume than 6 gallons, but it got me thinking. I may try it next time I brew.

    Any SN Celebration sightings yet?

Anyone drinking 2012 Celebration? Haven't seen it in My part of VA yet. The local Kroger is pretty well stocked on Tumbler so it may take a little while.

    hops leftovers, style suggestions?

Hello, I have leftovers of several hops varieties and would like brew something up to use them. I can come up with a recipe but I'm not sure what style to go with. I'm leaning towards an IPA for the sheer sake of having a simple grain bill but my hops might work better for a brown or hoppy...

    Wyeast 3787

3787 took my 1.089 OG Tripel down to 1.008 in about 2 weeks, possibly less as I waited for awhile to take a hydrometer reading. Looks to be over 10% and holy hot alcohol flavors! It's going to take awhile to mellow out but it will be good & dry!

    Re-activating old(ish) starter

Hello, I had a multi-step starter going for a high gravity Tripel then my daughter was born a few weeks early and brewing life has been on hold. Using yeastcalc.com, I was doing 3 2L steps, the yeast pack was kind of old, and had done 2 of them before the jug was placed in the fridge for...

3/13/12 mfg Trappist High Gravity starter question

Hey there, I'm planning to brew JZ's Strict Observance Tripel from Brewing Classic Styles. The OG is 1.081 and I got 1 pack of the Wyeast Trappist High Gravity yeast intending to make a starter with step up(s) to get my full army of yeast for fermenting this thing. Problem is, the...

    Thoughts on IPA recipe?

Edit: Please note that I have come up with a new recipe that is probably much closer to the original Pako's. It's on page 5 of this thread. I'm hoping to come up with a semblance of Snake River's Pako's Eye-P-A. One of the brewery guys gave me the ingredient list and gravities and said "heavy...

    Snake River Pako's IPA?

Has anyone ever tried to clone this? I had this on a trip to WY a couple years ago and it was wonderful. I'd love to make something close to it. Any ideas? Their website only mentions "6.8% ABV and 60+ IBUs with explosive hop aroma from a pungent Simcoe/Columbus blend." So I guess I know what...

    BCS Tripel/Dubbel lagering question

I'm thinking of doing either the Tripel or Dubbel from Brewing Classic Styles but I do not have the ability to lager the beer as the recipes recommend. My basement, however, maintains a low 60s temp year round so it's not like they would be stored hot. How much will NOT lagering these styles...

One (1) FREE Chinook rhizome to first responder

hey all, I was just digging my hops and I have a nice Chinook rhizome that needs a new home. I would plant it but I've got 3 more varieties on order and that will just about take up my growing space and I don't have it in my heart to throw it away. The Chinook has been my most vigorous grower...
