Anvil immersion chiller quick cleaning before use question

I set up my new anvil foundry with a long wash using pbw / starsan. During yesterday's brew day I forgot about washing the new immersion chiller that came with. I had a 5 gl bucket of star San and stuck the chiller in and washed it quickly with my hand to get most of the manufactoing oils off...

    Father-in-law distroyed kegerator... Kind of

I just wanted to share an event that happened while moving to a new city. My father-in-law thought he was being helpful when he decided to move my Kegerator. The only thing I told my wife no one could touch. So he ripped the liquid line off the perclick tap and sprayed beer all over the room...

    Immersion chiller on garage floor

I had a bad finish to a great brew day. My new setup is in the garage away from my normal on stove routine. I forgot to tighten all the hoses to my wort chiller and to prevent or stop a lot of water from going into my wort, I placed the clean chiller on the floor to stop / shut everything down...

How to clean larger brew kettles?

I'm moving up from a 7 gallon pot to a larger brew kettle that has a ball valve, false bottom and a front facing thermometer. I got a brand new polar ware kettle at Goodwill for $25 which was a huge surprise to see that there. Now i'm concerned with how i'm going to clean this kettle before...

    Squeeze the bag

I've been doing BIAB for a bit now and I've always squeezed the grain bag in another container after the mash to get every bit of wort out of the grains. its a hot, sticky, painful experience that i wish could be easier. I feel like if i don't squeeze, nothing comes out of the bag even if i...

    Should i cover my buckets

I've been brewing beer for a year now and have been covering my ale pale buckets with towels to prevent light from affecting my beer. Does the plastic cover it or do i need a t-shirt or towels in my case. Should i skip the towels when brewing with a plastic bucket?

    Cleaning multiple kegs with issues

Today I was cleaning two kegs that I just purchased from an adventurous online brew shop. One keg looked like came from China and the other said Coca Cola right on the side. When I was finished cleaning with pbw, I then reassembled and didn't notice that one dip tube was longer than the other...

Is this infected with black mold?

*** Previously mentioned on Surely AHA rally post *** I have a pale lacto sour using wyeast1007 german ale yeast and is finished with a FG of apx 1012. It's great with a bit of sweet and sour taste. When i took the FG i noticed black lines and splotches in the bucket. Nothing floating but...

http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/events/surly-brewing-co-aha-rally/ Anybody going to the Surly Wort Rally July 19? For $5.99 you can take home 5 gallons of wort, a glass and a tour. I'm pretty excited but am wondering if i need to grab yeast before i go or if they will provide or...

forgot to Degas Keg after transferring from fermentation

I forgot to degas the oxygen out of the keg for an hour after transferring it from primary. It was in the frig and the keg felt warm so i pulled it out and degassed as much as i could. I think i over filled the keg because i was spraying beer when releasing pressure. My question is how much...

    heat belt or space heater?

I'm about to brew a BIAB Saison gathered from one of my LHBS. The yeast is WLP565 and I'm thinking about starting low and working my way up to 75-80F. I want to get it warmer than my usual 70 to 72 which is the ambient temp in the kitchen. I thought i'd invest in a heat belt to help get the...

    Best inexpensive grain mill

Could I get a few commercial grain mills to compare from the homebrewtalk community? I just started brewing all grain and I think buying one big bag of non crushed grain would last longer and save me some cash. I'm not looking for farm equipment, just an inexpensive grain mill more or less...

    Squeeze hop bag

For my first biab yesterday i thought it would be cleaner to use hop bags during the boil. I forgot to pinch or squeeze the hop bags after the boil and just threw them away. Save for a bit of wort, will the hop bags hold in the hops alpha acid? The wort smelled hoppy so who knows until i...

    BIAB bag question

Brewers Best Cherry extract for American Wheat

Has anyone used Brewers Best Cherry extract on a wheat beer with much success? I purchased a bottle of cherry extract to use on a 5 gallon batch of American wheat but I'm worried after reading posts complaining of a cough syrup flavor. I was told when i purchased at my LHBS to add some and...

Washing equipment with chlorinated city water

I just purchased a better bottle for some Edwort's apfelwein and after i washed it with PBW, I could smell chlorine. I recently moved here and now realize that while running the tap water I can smell chlorine misting up almost as strongly as a chlorinated swimming pool. After I used Star San...

Whats that smell in the bucket after bottling?

I'm new to homebrewing but love beer. My first batch is a red/amber ale that is bottle conditioning right now. Before bottling, I took a whiff and it smelled like great beer and looks awesome but had a hint of skunkiness. It was a pleasant smell but reminded me a bit of Old...

    Rookie pitching mistake

Last night I completed the mash/wort or a partial grain red ale and threw it in the bucket. I woke up the yeast with a laddle of wort cooled down and it bubbled up to look like pizza dough. While the yeast was working i noticed that my digital thermometer was stuck at 478F. So I did an ice...
