    Mistake On The Lake IPA

Hello everybody: This is an IPA version of Dude's Lakewalk APA, an HBT classic. I originally called this 2 Mistakes IPA, because that's how I got the recipe. First, I overshot my OG into the kettle, so I beefed up my hops additions into IPA territory, then I put double the dry hops in the...

    bottle priming with a pipette

I was thinking about buying a digital pipette for priming up small batches of beer before I force carb, as an alternative to beergunning later. Does anyone have any experience or links where I can get good information as to dosage and procedure? Thanks KD

Can I hold a lager at 50F while...?

I need to let a lager that is two weeks behind another batch catch up before lagering both. Anybody see a problem holding in secondary until second beer is ready to lager? Thanks KD

Pro-Mahs batch size and water needed

I'm having a senior moment here. I just had to up my "left in kettle" quanitty to try a new setup and was wondering about batch size. If I plug in 5.5 gallons for batch size, this will be my after boil quantity above the post boil waste numbers; right? In other words, my 5.5 gallon batch will...

    Decoction vs. No-Sparge

i was reading a transcript form a talk given at 2005 AHA regarding the comparison of the two techniques for brewing lagers and gaining favorable malt profiles. It was purported that no-sparge was a reasonable alternative to decoction. I do a fair amount of no-sparge brewing of ales, but am...

    Lagers and Fermenter Geometry

Anybody know if there is any disadvantage to fermenting lagers in a conical? Or should I ask if there is any advantage to a flat bottomed vessel for lagers? :) Thanks KD

    Microwave Sterilization

Hey, i was thinking about getting one of these to sanitize silicon racking hoses and small parts on the fly. Seems like a cheap way to get autoclave quality results. Anybody use the microwave for anything around here? Avent Express Microwave Steam Sterilizer : Target KD

Mixed 1056 and 1272 by mistake

Through a comedy of errors, I pitched one pack of 1056 and one of 1272 into an impromptu rye APA brew yesterday. The thing took off like a rocket btw. Anyway, I usually use 1272 in this beer and am wondering how my blunder will affect the product. Anybody else? KD

    Fermentation Fridge dual temperature ?

I just scored this bitchin' fridge for next to nothing. Do you think it would be possible to compartmentalize it for two temperatures? I was thinking one section at about 50F and the rest at 62F. Any ideas? The chilled air comesin at the top right of the unit.

    Dissecting A Therminator

I would like to know if anyone is interested in such a science project. My idea is to buy a new Therminator for my brew club (or anyone with a well used unit) and saw theirs apart. (Yikes!) Once and for all, I would like to see what a well worn PC looks like even if it is properly...

    Chiller Wars

Hi guys I was just screwing around and decided to to a simple chiller comparison. This is just chilling, and it's just water. No other factors being considered. The first video is recirculating through a Therminator back into the kettle. I will do the IC tomorrow. Ground water temperature...

    Wok Stove Brew Rig

I'm buying this cool three door freezer for peanuts and the lady said she would give me this if I hauled it away. Seems like it could make a pretty cool brew stand. It's a wok stove and has 100k btu burners I believe. Anybody ever see anything like this for brewing? I have no real use for it...

    Hop Back - Benefits

I have been considering adding a hop back to my system. I am curious as to some of the seemingly additional benefits one might get. It would seem that the hops in the unit would be a good pre-filter for a plate chiller or for recirculation while IC chilling. I get so much cold break, that I...

Attention Mail Order Vendors - Get A Clue

My latest debacle involves Bacterial cultures shipped in the middle of August (from a popular vendor) in a non-insulated container. I get these things with melted ice packs in a foil envelope. Naturally they were about 120F after cooking in the big brown oven that delivered them (2nd day air)...

Dry Hop ten gallon batch racking and stratification

So I just moved up to fermenting 10 gallon batches in a conical fermenter. I'm wondering what goes on in there during dry-hopping. I would imagine there is a fair amount of stratification with some more aromatic beer towards the bottom(pellets). Would I need to agitate this beer and allow...
