Gypsum?

i just got a recipe that included gypsum in it. i was told to put it in the wort when i start my first boil for my grain. What is the purpose of gypsum
 
Gypsum is calcium sulfate. It is used to lower the pH of your water and to meet specific water profiles. I would not add this unless you know your water profile.
