I would say you could probably use plumbers emery cloth to do this.

I did the same thing your looking to try to do. Believe me just order them online and save yourself the headache. That is unless you like wandering around home depot for a couple hours.

I do want to conserve water but I also want to make sure that I can cool the wort quickly even in the summertime when the tap water is warmer.
