    Help cleaning a carboy...

Thanks for the reply! I am certain this is latex remaining from the fig skins (i think, anyway!). I've used C-Brite for years on this and other carboys without this happening. What is PBW, btw? Thanks again! Brian

    Help cleaning a carboy...

Thanks. I'll give it a shot. I shudder at the thought of intentionally getting vinegar in one of my carboys! !-D

    Help cleaning a carboy...

Hi All! Several years ago I made a fig wine. I didn't know to remove the skins, and the wine left a hazy foggy look to the carboy. I've tried to clean it with C-Brite (soak and scrub) and Starsan without any noticable effect. Any suggestions on how to get this carboy lear again? Also, would...

Yeast biodiversity... a good or bad thing?

Hi All! I'm fairly new to the mead making realm. I've made many wines (most putrid). In wine-making, we strive to sterilize a must and then inoculate it with a single strain of yeast. I see, in meads, a similar practice. I got to thinking, is there a harm in having more than one type of...

    Whole Hive Mead

Hi All! I'm new here (again!). Just got into mead making. Have 2 batches going each dived into 2 one gallon fermenters. I started raising honeybees last year and may just have to try this come fall!

    Sierra Nevada Pale Ale

Not to resurrect this thread fr4om the dead, but I'm new to appreciating quality beer. Igrabbed a six of SNPA a few weeks ago at Walgreens as I was out of beer. I was hugely impressed and have been on a kick for it since. I just bottled my 1st batch of beer (Irish stout) and have an American...

Transporting fermenting beer (in secondary) by car

Before I start yapping stuff I know nothing about, let it be said that I am a nooooobie who is making a first batch of beer currently. But I have made many wines. Is your secodary in a glass carboy? If so, you could place saran wrap or something like a bag into the neck of the carboy and fill...

Wit Beer in Primary for 5 months?

Jason, Why a possibility of more yeast? Would it be to get a carbonation in the bottle, I guess? Thanks, I'm trying to learn! Brian

    Moving to Princeton, NJ

If ou ever get a little further north and want to check out another place, try Corrado's in Clifton. http://www.corradosmarket.com/home/store-wine.html I moved to virginia beach about 10 years ago and got all my wine making supplies there. They had a huge selection of brewing supplies as well...

    Stirring?

Thanks All, I appreciate the insight and encouragement. I am concerned though that the amount of CO2 being made will be insufficient. It's really slowly fermenting (by the amount of surface bubbles being made). What gravity do beers end up at, generally? I've always fermented my wine to...

    Stirring?

My initial SG was 1.052 ( think. I rechecked it a few minutes ago and I'm at 1.018 so there's fermentation going on. My lid apparently isn't airtight. So I made a gasket out of plastic wrap. I'll probably transfer it over to a glass carboy later tonight. I thought the fermentation would be...
