    Trouble with the trub

So I just finished brewing an Amber Wheat ale on the weekend. I think that whirlpooling with only a spoon is ineffective, so i might need a chugger or march pump to do it right. Regardless, I gave the wort 20 minutes to settle after chilling and I had less loss. Only around 1 and a bit gal of...

    Trouble with the trub

Great post with lots of information. I think I might try a nylon sock this batch to contain the hop pellets, then I will try to vigorously whirl pool after cooling and allow to settle for 20 minutes. I have been reading on whirlpooling, and it was invented just to deal with pellet hops (by...

    Trouble with the trub

I use pellet hops so I cant contain those in a bag i think. Next brew, I will stir like hell after chilling to whirlpool, then ill leave it for 20 minutes to compact down. Hopefully I'll have less loss. Ill report back here then to see how much that helps.

    Trouble with the trub

Hi Y'all, So I have been brewing all grain 5 gal batches for some time now, and am noticing that I have a lot of trub after my boil (or its not trub and I'm doing something wrong). I use hop pellets and wirlfloc in most batches, and I have an immersion coil that I use to chill (30 minute chill...

Autumn Seasonal Beer Thunderstruck Pumpkin Ale (AG and Extract versions)

I made a batch of this back in Oct 2016 and I had several people tell me it was the best pumpkin ale they ever had. I concurred! Thanks for the recipe.

    DIY gemination room/kiln

Hi Y'all, I was looking to try my hand at growing a little bit of hops and barley. DIY hops is covered in a lot of detail on here, but I haven't seen much of anyone working on there own germination floor or kiln. Does anyone have any links to someone who has made a small scale kiln and...

    Batch sparge specific question

Search you tube, All grain brewing with john palmer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5J8S5nBdUc About 13 minutes in, he adds the sparge water but doesnt drain right to the bottom first. He drains to the start of the grain then adds the sparge water, stirs and sits it.

    Batch sparge specific question

I thought that if you drained your mash tun before sparge that you might be at a bit more risk of a stuck mash? I will try method A today and see how it goes. Making a Canadian Wheat Ale.

    Batch sparge specific question

Hi All, I was going to be doing a batch sparge tomorrow and I was watching conflicting information on one part of it. When you drain after the mash: A) Do you drain until all of the water is out of the mash tun and the drain runs dry, then add your sparge and drain completely again? B) Do...

    No carb after secondary

I sacrificed a bottle of my beer and tried it and you were right, it is mildy carbonated. All of the Beers I've done in the past carbed up in 2 weeks but i guess the longer secondary time on this one slowed it down. The ciders were in secondary for almost two months so im sure they won't carb...

I have been noticing recently with my cider now beer that after its been in the secondary for over a month, i can't get it to bottle prime. My last two ciders and 1 beer did not carb up after 3 weeks of bottle conditioning. I add the correct sugar to the brews at bottling time and the ferm...

    Swamp Cooler Material

Hi Y'all, So I have been tinkering with a swamp cooler for a few weeks now, and I wanted to ask what is the best material to use for the evaporation? I have tried a cotton towel, but it doesn't seem to wick too well. I also tried a synthetic exercise shirt, but the water only travels up 1/4 the...
