Using old grain for yeast starters

Hey guys, I have some old Maris Otter and two-row from about 2 years ago. I tried making a batch of IPA and it tastes pretty bleh. I’m thinking the grain is just too old and not ideal for brewing, but I was wondering what you guys thought about using it for starters? I was thinking of...

    Welding in Bay Area?

Thanks for the name, do you happen to have a number? The only listing in Google doesn’t list a phone number or website. Thank you.

    Welding in Bay Area?

Does anyone know of anybody that does sanitary welding in the Bay Area, CA? When I was in Sacramento I saw an ad for homebrew scale welding at the local brew shop, but I haven’t seen anything around here. I am just looking to do 3 ferrules, and while I can TIG weld and have access to a TIG...

    Going back to extract??

Why not do a BIAB instead of using extract? I have recently been doing that for the same reasons you listed, but doing BIAB takes away the cost con you listed. Is it a problem with pot size?

Am I going to have problems with my boil?

I will likely insulate, but I’m still baffled as I brew 20 gallon batches out in the cold with 5500 watts and get a good boil at 85%. I thought this element would handle 4 gallons like it was nothing. I haven’t actually brewed wort with the new element, only tested with water, so I don’t know...

Why is it harder to boil in my new pot?

That is an excellent suggestion! It is already wired to plug right into a wall, so should be easy to run that test.

Why is it harder to boil in my new pot?

Thanks guys. The old pot was a 6 gallon Stainless pot with tri-clad bottom. My stove is a glass top, so being very flat is important, but I’m trying to get away from having to use the stove all together. The new pot is a little wider, but only by about an inch. It is also a tri clad bottom...

Why is it harder to boil in my new pot?

Thanks for all the answers, it’s something I didn’t really anticipate when I bought a 10 gallon pot. I thought I was being smart to plan for both 2.5 and 5 gallon batches, but now I need to get this figured out. I was planning on adding a second element for 5 gallon batches, but I guess I may...

Why is it harder to boil in my new pot?

The answer is I’m an idiot and I meant Boilcoil from Blichmann.

Am I going to have problems with my boil?

I had the temp probe in the whole time, and it was always about 210.5-212.5. I’m right at sea level, so I assume it SHOULD be 212. That’s good to know about the hops, I never really thought about that.

Am I going to have problems with my boil?

I have been brewing for years, but never thought much about the boiling as it always just worked. However, I have changed equipment and I am getting a weird boil so I wanted to see what you guys thought. I put a 1650 watt element in a 10 gallon pot, so I decided to test it and even with 4...

Why is it harder to boil in my new pot?

Hi all, I have a big 20 gallon system with 30+ gallon pots without any insulation and I run a single 5500 watt BoilCoil element in my boil kettle. At the start of the boil I've got 28 gallons + and I have no problem getting a rolling boil going without a lid and about 85% power. So recently I...

    One control panel, two systems?

Sorry, I meant with an XLR plug/receptacle. These look like they might have an 1/8” mini phone, is that right? I imagine it wouldn’t be too complicated to swap it out so all my equipment uses the same stuff. But now they got me thinking about using 1 box again, haha. Since the EZBoil isn’t a...

    One control panel, two systems?

Thanks ajdelange and Doug, it looks like you described the same thing. The first diagram actually looks like how my box is already wired. The only difference is the receptacle adapter cord. Am I ready it correctly that the cord would be the only difference? Of course, I will go through all...

    One control panel, two systems?

This is the Inkbird PID already wired up that I was talking about. Looks perfect to control a single 1650 watt element: https://www.brewhardware.com/product_p/tempcontrol_ipb16.htm It states it uses a PT100 sensor, but I am hoping to be able to change the receptacle to a RTD so I can use my...
