    New Brewer from Lancaster, PA

welcome to the obsession! Carboys are fine for both fermenting and secondary. You may want to use a blowoff tube for the primary. I ferment in a bucket and have never had the problem of blowoffs personally. The secondary is just a clearing tank in actuallity and just helps drop out most of the...

    thermal layers

you shouldn't need to stir constantly. but should stir well at mash in give it a couple minutes and stir again, then check your temps as you go. Continue this until your mash pretty much equalizes out and remains constant at you desired mash temp. I usually don't sweat it if I find different...

Best spring water brand - mineral content

Thank you for your research. I tried to find some of this info a few months back and was unsuccessful. I also use bottled springs water and have used Arrowhead and Crystal Springs the most..they are usually what I cn find around my location readily... After reading these reports though, I guess...

2 Days in the Secondary and No Activity. Is this Bad?

You seem to have a common misconception of what a secondary fermentation vessel is for. This of course due to the fact that it is called secondary fermentation. It should be called a clearing vessel. When you rack away from the primary you are removing it from most of the yeast and sediment...

    Maris Otter ?

Well, don't know about everybody else but MO is usually what I buy for most of my base malt. I think it has a better overall flavour than regualr 2-row. Only occasionally will I substitute 2-row, usually when I run out of MO and I want to brew something before I can buy another bag of the MO...

    Newbie question about adding hops

just add them in. Everytime that I tried using a bag for pellets they just mushed up and went right thru anyway. I started just tossing all of them in to cut another process and time and money. just use a strainer when going into the primary .

    Which yeast??

your recipe doesn't really look like a bitter or ESB type recipe. Either the s-04 or the London look like they would be more in line with what your making. Just my opinion tho. cheers anyway!

    Northern Idaho Shops/Breweries

Bluedragon, N. in Hayden Lake there is a little deli called Danens or Daanen's something like that. I just found it about a month ago and they have an imported beer section in the back. Very good selection! It's on Prarie (sp) Ave just about a block east of Government Way. They also have some...

    Mash efficiency

Burgia, you should be checking that conversion is complete before you start taking gravity readings. A lot of people will do this by pulling out a tsp. of the mash (liquid only) then using a drop or two of iodine in it. If it changes color (blue, black, purple) then it is not fully converted...

    yeast pitch

Thanks for the replies guys. Pappers..sort of an experiment, sort of what I had on hand, and both were fast closing on end of best to pitch by dates. My thoughts were that the lager's high end and the ale's low end were the same, sooo...? WTF why not? Stevorino.. yes both into one 5 gal...

    yeast pitch

Brewed an American Amber yesterday and decided to try pitching both a lager (WL San Francisco) and an ale (WL Pacific). The San Fran says 58-65F and the Pacific 65-68F. Never tried this before. Anyone have any ideas what this will do? Didn't make a starter for either, and in controlled temp of 63F

how to screw up a yeast starter

Do you have a stir plate? or are you using the old shake the hell out of it everytime you walk by it method, (my present method since I haven't gotten around to making the stir plate yet). From what I've read, it is actully better to use the starter while at high krausen. That being said, all...
