    Speidel Braumeister (brewmaster)

mattdru, I recommend you include about 1/2 pound of rice hulls in your grain bill to compensate for the wheat and wheat malt you're using.

    Speidel Braumeister (brewmaster)

I've got one for the 20L, and other than inverting it for a funnel for filling the malt pipe, I find it's useless: - during the boil condensation forms on it, and because it overhangs the vessel, the condensation drips around the vessel. - as the boil begins, the copper hood greatly increases...

    Bench capper vs. hand capper

I'm a bit uncoordinated, so I found the wing capper difficult to manage, and I broke a couple of bottles while trying to cap them. When I switched to a bench capper, it was MUCH easier, and I never broke a bottle again while capping. IMO, well worth the money.

    Liquid left in pump hoses

You can always "flush" the hoses by pumping very briefly from your HLT to the kettle to get the last few ounces of wort out. Just a thought.

    Thoughts on Hoegaarden

You should try Hoegaarden at the Hoegaarden brewery, when it's really fresh, and the Coriander really comes through. YUM!

I think what you've discovered is that whiskey is basically distilled beer.

Why not just add all sparge water if the cooler is big enough?

The real reason fly sparging more efficiently extracts sugars is that sugar will pass from the grain to the water until the concentration of sugar in the grain is more or less the same as is in the water. Thus, the less sugar that is in the water, the more sugar can be extracted. By sprinkling...

    RIMS - Tun return

I thought it was important to avoid aeration of hot wort, so use of a sparge arm should be avoided for a RIMS return (unless it is submerged in the wort at the top of the grain bed). Admittedly, all the water vapor in the tun will reduce the HSA problem, but it won't be 100% steam in there...

    Greetings from Brussels

Hi, I'm an experienced AG brewer, now living overseas, and still interested, but unable to brew where I am now. I've been lurking for a while, and plan to contribute to the discussion when I can. Lots of great beer to be had here anyway...

    Whirlpool, side port, and trub

The whirlpool may be usable with a Hopstopper or other screen when you're recirculating for the whirlpool the "draw" from the kettle to the pump is from a coupler higher on the kettle than the drain, e.g. the one used for the thermometer. The thermometer and the whirlpool can share the coupler...

    Kitchenaid Mixer Grain Mill

My well intentioned wife bought me one of those, as she had a KA mixer, and as the previous poster said, it's for making SMALL batches of flour. Also, it really is a flour mill, not a grain crusher, more like a Corona mill, so you'll end up with a lot of flour and ripped husks. I replaced it...
