New to Mead - Plan for first batch

Hello meaders (is that a word?). Long time homebrewer here and I'm going all in for my first batch of blueberry vanilla melomel. Here is my plan. Please give me any advice before I attack my first batch of mead. I'm targeting a 4 -5 gallon batch. Ingredients: 13.5 lbs local honey Two 3-lb cans...

Any feedback on the Captain Crush Grain Mill?

Brandon, I'm looking forward to your review. The sale is over but I decided to hold off since I won't be brewing for a little while. I just maxed out my system with 4 batches. Doug

Any feedback on the Captain Crush Grain Mill?

20% off this mill today (1/23/14) for 2 days only. Looking for any more feedback from the two guys who own this mill. That makes it $223.99 plus $15.25 shipping to CA. Think it's worth it for my first mill?

Belgian Dark Strong Ale Dragon Slayer - Gulden Draak "clone"

I've found that if you use Pam cooking spray on AL foil for the candi sugar, it works great. Comes right up. I tried wax paper first, then AL foil with no spray. The third time was the charm using AL foil and cooking spray.

dropped stir plate magnet in carboy

I agree with ODI3, it shouldn't be an issue unless your stir bar is very old and the coating has worn off.

    Franziskaner Recipe?

razorbuck, how did your batch turn out? I am currently harvesting the Franziskaner yeast to add to a weisen-bock. I love the flavor of Franzy so I'm attempting to harvest the yeast from the bottle. I've not had any of the Whitelabs or Yyeast bring the same flavors of Franzy.

    What's your favorite Belgian

I just got back from the Brussels Belgian Beer festival. During my 5 days in Brussels, I tasted 178 different beers. Two really stood out as absolutely fantastic 1) Westvleteren 12 (also St Bernardus 12 is the same recipe): Also the 8 is great too. 2) Gulden Draak 9000 I love Belgium!

    Pliney Clone - Nice version

I've just finished a keg of what started as a Pliney the Elder clone, but I tweeked it to make it my own and it turned out absolutely fantastic. The overall ABV was 10.25% but was still very smooth and floral. I thought I would share this recipe, since everyone that tried it, loved it. I did a...

    Beer in San Diego

If you are downtown, you should go to Mission Brewery. It's just east of Petco Park. Most of my favorite breweries are in North County so they may not be an option. (Iron Fist, Mother Earth, Lost Abbey are my top 3 but there are tons more). A great downtown bar is The Neighborhood. Lots of...

    Belgian Beer Week in September

Myself and a couple of brewing friends are heading to Brussels for the Belgian Beer Week festival. We have a week in Brussels and the festival is 3 days. Has anyone been to Belgium before that can recommend day trips from Brussels? I've looked into the Abbey's, but most of them will be at...
