In the interest of continuing an old thread I just went to check on a keg of pilsner I'd had in the fridge for some months without getting attention. It was my first attempt at a pilsner, and somewhere along the lines I messed up causing the beer to never really clear - which resulted in me...
That's what I was thinking, there is no foul smell coming from the airlock so it is likely some funky fermenting action. I had actually punched the fruit down once before and given it a bit of a swirl to wet the fruit. I was hesitant to keep doing so based on my theory that the low oxygen head...
Hey everybody,
I've encountered something of a mystery development in a fermenter of mine, and while I'm pretty much doing nothing about it I was wondering if anyone else had seen something similar.
I prepped a pretty standard 80% 2-row / 20% vienna malt grain bill with some light hopping...
Thanks RPH Guy - when you say "use some L. plantarum" - I have some probiotic pills in the refrigerator right now that has L. plantarum as the first listed ingredient. That being said, there are a number of other strains of bacteria in the particular pill. Do those generally cause problems? I...
Hey everyone,
Ive been perusing the forums for a bit now after having convinced myself that I was going to try a Berliner Weiss. I of course made this decision with little to no thought, and having gone through the forums for a while I feel like I have been looking through WebMD after...
I've also been doing this. I make a number of batches that are sub-3G, so the minimized sample size is a good return on my just having to plug some numbers into a calculator.
And on a similar topic - Cav, do you have the jacket with the immersion chiller? And is yours the model that can warm beers as well? Happy to hear that you like it though, I'm looking forward to being in a lot more control of the fermenting temp, even if it's just low 60s for ales.
Yes, I have a number of 2G brewing buckets that are slightly tapered at the bottom and fit in my freezer, so I think I could make a good chunk of ice and be able to plunk it out into the fermenting bucket with just a bit of work. I wish I had a fridge capable of holding this thing - maybe if...
Cavpilot - that is good to know! I was planning on using the BJIC to get the wort down to pitching temp, but I would be nervous the entire time about contamination. Would it maybe make more sense to freeze the 1 gallon of additional water, and then rack the wort (likely about 60-65 degrees...
Thanks Kent, I was thinking of going 90 min on both given that for some reason, I remember reading or hearing somewhere that 90 min mashes were used on grain bills like this one to achieve full conversion (whatever that exactly means, but if you don't know any better 'full conversion' sounds...
Hey guys,
As the title says, I'm about to take a crack at my first lager and have only a loose understanding of what I am doing and I was hoping someone on here could make fun of my ideas enough to point me in a slightly better direction.
I recently bought a Brew Jacket Immersion Cooler...
Nothing wrong with a lot of those beers. I have an old Schlitz bar down the street that has survived as a small concert venue, and I gotta say, Schlitz on tap - pretty good.
