    Rough brew day yesterday:(

I got to thinking about this more today, and wanted to ask... When you say the "crush of the grain"...is it smaller better, or bigger better. My logic say small with allow for more conversion and then extraction of sugars. Just want to make sure I understand this,

    Rough brew day yesterday:(

Now that you mention the crush...I did think it was a bit large. I went to my usually homebrew supply, and just asked them to crush it, didn't really give any specifics, being I never have in the past. Braufessor, how to compensate for the lower efficiency when doing big beers, with bigger...

    Rough brew day yesterday:(

Had a rough day brewing yesterday... In a couple of my other posts, I have been fighting a bitter off flavor in my IPA's, and my plan was to take accurate notes and keep my temps on target as accurate as i possible could... it turned out to be a rough brew day.... Here was the results...

    Batch Sparging Question

Again, thx...I have a lot of things to try on my next brew. I thought by going down to 60deg at the start of fermentation would be to cool...but I will definitely try that next time... Also I will keep my sparge temps cooler. i am in the process of setting up a HERMS system, of which i will...

    Batch Sparging Question

First, thx for all the info... One step that I don't think I made clear, was I mash out..drain my MT and then add my sparge water. Usually I take a quick temp after sparge water is added, and I am around 170-175. I do let it sit here for 10 mins. I also use store bought bottled water and...

    Batch Sparging Question

OK, thx guys I will try this the next time I brew... Any opinions on the way I do my water amounts?? Using half my pre-boil to mash and the other half to sparge?? Basically ignoring the 1.25qt/lb of grain rule? Will this lead to off flavors also?

    Batch Sparging Question

Not trying to hijack this thread...but I think this is related to my sparge process.. But the problem I seem to have is I am getting a fruity taste in my beers. In doing much reading here, I am wondering if my mash/sparge process is what is causing it. Typically, I have been just...

    Batch Sparging Question

ANold..if I may ask....when you add the 6 gal to get your total pre-boil up to 9 gals...what temp is the water you add? Are you trying to get the grain temp up to 170deg..so you might add 190 degree water..sparge water??

    ss fitting with aluminum pot

Still looking into building a HLT. Due to cost, I am pricing out aluminium pots, and want to use my SS coil inside using weldless fitting through the side of the pot. My question is, are there any issues with using SS fittings and SS coil inside a aluminum pot....This will only be used for a...

    Metal or plastic HLT

That is a good point...some of the issues I have read was using plastic having water up to 190+deg...you might get off flavors not to mention getting some chemicals into something you are going to drink.. Is this a valid concern? I know most food safe buckets are HDPE (recycle #2).

    Metal or plastic HLT

So I am looking to build a new'er HLT for my HERMS system. I have read the posts where what people have done, using both plastic buckets and SS pots. What I would like to know is what people wish they would have done differnet...mainly the people that have used plastic. I am leaning...

    Weldless fitting in BK

Obviously many people are using the weldless fitting in their BK. Is there any issues or concerns with using these fitting next to the direct heat of the propane burner? Meaning, do you have any issues with the parts in the valves melting or the handle of the valves melting? Also, I realize...

Wort transfer from Mash tun to BK

So I have a Herms system using a chugger pump from my 10 gal igloo cooler to coil in HLT back to my cooler. This works very well... After mash is done, i then use my pump to get my wort from my cooler to my BK. Usually I just hang the hose going to the BK over the top lip of the BK. But my...

    Batch Sparge Question

When I first switched to AG..I was doing my batch sparge this way...no mash out on the first step. I was getting very poor efficiency. Then again I was very new to AG and it could have been that. I am interested in knowing the science behind it....if some one knows?
