I have both.
A 5 gallon Round Igloo and a larger rectangle Coleman.
I batch sparge.
If I do a large batch I'll use the larger MLT, otherwise I'll use the smaller round one.
Being an old time winemaker that is the first thing I did. I brought up the carboy out of my wine cellar (mid 60's) to the house (now at 75*F) and stirred up the sediment/yeast. It gave some airlock activity for a bit (probably mostly the higher temps and the expanding liwuid volume) but the FG...
Thanks for the Vodka advice. I was a bit concerned about that.
The low alcohol really doesn't matter to me in the sense that I wanted a low ABV beer anyway. My concern is I thought I heard/read that if the alcohol is too low that it will not keep... that is, it will go bad quickly. It will...
I was trying to make a very low alcohol beer ... a Mild. Guidelines say that the abv can be as low as 2.8%
Unfortunately, I used a yeast that I don't normally use and the ferment did not get to the FG that I had hoped for. It ended up being only 2.3% alcohol by volume (according to BrewSmith...
After years and years of wine making supplies and more recently for beer making supplies I have to say that the four online retailers that really stand out in my opinion are:
BrewMasters Warehouse (I love this place for beer supplies!!)
Austin Homebrew
Northern Brewer
Midwest Supplies
Hi Ed...
Just wanted to say thanks and to let you know that I have been more impressed with my orders from BrewMasters Warehouse than any other online retailer I've ever done business with!!! I'm now a life-long customer.:ban:
Now for a question... I did not order any dry yeast packets on...
Interesting.....
I'm a newbie.... I used to transfer everything into the carboy. Then this last time, I started "thinking" (usually a mistake) and I decided to let it sit for an hour and rack off just the clear and leave "all" the trub behind. I too noticed a big loss of "beer"..:(...
Wow!!!
I've been reading all the post and had to put in an order to see for myself.
And sure enough..... just 2 days after I ordered (I'm in Nebraska) I got my delivery.
Grains were sealed in a nice moisture proof bag.... this is really nice as I didn't plan to make the beer for a few...
I have the AG version going right now. I made it up 3 days ago and it is in a 6 gallon carboy right now.
It looks dark tan in the carboy... assume it will be lighter tan when it is done.
Looks okay to me....
I live in on a farm and have well water. Very good tasting and no "city" chemicals added. It is pH 7 but we also make our own "distilled" water because of the high "nitrites" from farm fertilizers. The distilled water is also exactly the same pH.. about 7.
I am about to do my first 2 AG...
I'm about to do my first AG.
I'm trying to figure out what "buffer 5.2" chemical is. I've seen it in the beer catalogs and seen a reference or two in posts but am not sure how and when to use it.
It appears to buffer the mash so it stays at a pH of 5.2 which I understand would...
I remember drinking Genesee cream ale in my younger days when I lived on the Northeast.
I'd like to brew it. Some retailers offer a cream ale kit but others do not.
What makes a cream ale a cream ale??? How does it differ from a lite ale or an american lite ale?
Thanks
