    any one from southern mn?

I have about 60 12oz amber beer bottles to give away. They need to be cleaned and most still have labels on them. I have been collecting empty bottles but I just have too many now, I can't keep up the brewing pipeline. Most of these are very nice thick glass, mostly from German beer brands so...

Lager weird layer on top in secondary

Hey all! I currently have my first lager brew in secondary in the fridge. Everything went according to plan/recipe. Now I noticed there is a weird layer floating on top of the beer. I saw some posts where people said they have something similar but they say it is foam of krausen. Mine is...

    Stuck fermentation?

Ok, should have mentioned that stuff earlier. All grain, no extract OG was 1.054 Temp target was 154, I think it was maybe more like 160. I had some issues with my thermometer. Next time I will use a different one and hopefully it goes better. But I am just not sure if that difference in mash...

    Stuck fermentation?

Hello all! Sorry to ask this question, I know it gets asked a lot. But this has never happened to me and I am a little stuck. I brewed a Hefeweizen and used Wyeast 3068 for the first time, usually i go with White Labs. Anyway, I checked the gravity after one week when I usually bottle my...

Whats an acceptable Mash Tun Deadspace amount

Wow, my cooler has about 3 quart deadspace, with a SS braid. I think it does not matter though, you just add that water like you guys said. In the end, it gets figured into your total brewhouse efficiecny, but it's probably not a huge drop. Just need a little more grain.

    Compensate for already dissolved CO2

Thanks for the replies! I am pretty sure it is finished, been at 1.012 for a few days, and it's actually a little bit below what I had planned. I like to bottle my Hefeweizen after 10-14 days in primary, I think it tastes best 3 to 4 weeks after brewday. Not a beer that needs a lot of aging...

    Compensate for already dissolved CO2

Hey guys and gals! Just a quick question. I am going to bottle a Hefeweizen this weekend. When I pulled gravity samples, I noticed that there were lots of little bubbles coming up in the sample tube. Seems to me there is a lot of residual CO2 from fermentation still dissolved. Now I use...

    Using RO water

https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f128/brewing-water-chemistry-primer-198460/ I have found this to be the easiest explanation, and seems to work well for many people judging by the comments.

Iodine use for test on the must

You can just buy an iodine solution at the pharmacy. It is used to disinfect wounds. If you really want to make your own, I think it is usually a 2% by weight solution (in water).

New Yeast Supplier- anybody heard of "Real Brewer's Yeast"?

So from the website of the company that seems associated with this yeast supplier, I read some stuff about genetic modification, DNA cloning, etc. This concerns me a bit, I know that the two big guys both stress very much that they don't do any genetic modifications to their strains, but only...

Can i travel by air with yeast samples in hand luggage

Aside from the issue of getting through security if you take them carry-on, you will also need to deal with customs when you get off the plane. I know that I have had to throw away all food that I had with me, and they really checked for it, I think this was when going to Mexico. Not sure how...

    Managing steam and boil off.

Well, my first partial boil extract batches I did in the kitchen and I really did not have any huge issues. Obviously it got pretty humid in the house, but I would just open doors and windows every once in a while and it would be OK. However, I mostly brewed when on days we were heating the...

    Taking bottles to altitude

I've had bottles in the suitcase in an airplane and they did not explode. However, some of them did leak some pressure and beer through the cap.

    Beersmith on Mac and Windows

Pretty sure. My order e-mail says the activation code is good for two computers. There is no option to choose between Mac or Win until you download the software. So I think it should work. If you really want to know for sure, the person to ask would be the developer of Beersmith, I am sure there...

    Thermal Conduction and Cooler Systems

It seems the issue a lot of the time is that the cooler is fairly well insulated at the bottom and sides, but not the top. This is fine if you are trying to keep stuff cold, but when trying to keep stuff warm, you want the top insulated better. I lose about 3 or 4 degrees over an hour in my...
