EKG and Fuggles are great for stouts. I wouldn't use Citra in a stout, but Citra would work for the APA (might not go too well with oatmeal, but experimentation is a core aspect of homebrewing!).
Cheers!
If you've already got Millennium, use it; no need to waste money to get something else for bittering. The only real difference you'll achieve between Millennium and Nugget for bittering is how bitter the beer turns out. This is dependent on the alpha acid (aa) content of each hop variety as...
Just thought I'd throw this out there, particularly for the newbies worried about their washed yeast:
I made a 1.3L starter on Monday with washed yeast that was in the fridge since mid-Feb (5 months). Starter was on stir plate for 30h and then put in fridge overnight to settle. Warmed to room...
It somewhat depends on how the yeast was stored. Was it kept cool (i.e. in the fridge) the whole time? Or was it left out? These are just rhetorical questions...
They don't really expire, but their viability (i.e. the amount of live vs. dead cells) does decrease over time. As @MannyZ says...
My first Chubby Boat was entered into the VanBrewers competition. The scores from 3 judges were 18, 24, and 20. They all agreed that it wasn't a bad beer, but that it was very off-style -- it was more like a Belgian IPA than and American IPA -- so it didn't score well in the AIPA category; it...
Just read that Butler's Bitter from the Niagara College Teaching Brewery won Gold for the English Style Pale Ale (Bitter) category at the Canadian Brewing Awards. Was that your class, Eric? If so, that's ultra-awesome! Congrats! If that wasn't your class, that's still super-awesome for your...
All-grain? Extract?
I'd try a general pale ale.... Fermentation temp is easier to handle compared to lagers. At least for a first brew...
Would give more details if I knew whether it was all-grain, extract, BIAB, etc....
I can't give any Edmonton area advice, but here in the Van area, we've got a couple other HBSs in addition to Dan's that might be worth checking out:
1. Bosa Grape http://ecom.bosagrape.com/home.php
2. Barley's Homebrewing http://www.barleyshomebrewing.com
So I tried my Chubby Boat today. It's pretty-darn tasty. But nowhere close to Fat Tug. I think you're right (or at least closer) with your hypothetical 4th batch:
I'll try that in a few weeks (got other batches fermenting and am with limited equipment/space)...
