American Pale Ale Da Yooper's House Pale Ale

I followed the original recipe except the cascade pellets I used were at 10.1 so a bit more IBUs, which is fine by me. All in all a great beer

Portland area hop growers; seeing shoots yet?

I have 2 zeus, 1 magnum, and 1 willamette plant that are all sending out shoots. The zeus and willamette have a bunch of shoots with the longest ones between 12-18" tall. No so much on the magnum, but a couple shoots up a few inches tall right now.

    My Hops Garden Project

Everything looked good right up until the plants started to burr out and then one day I noticed a bunch of them were brown. I thought maybe they weren't getting enough water, but after taking a closer look, I think it was heat burn. And it wasn't supper hot, so that's why I thought it might have...

    Moonshine experiment (Video)

if by 'work' you mean do you have something that is fermentable, yes, i believe you have something that is 'working' w/o adding hops, you don't have beer and w/o putting that fermented product through a still, you don't have moonshine. but hey, looks like you had fun...

    My Hops Garden Project

I have a simliar set up as your's - against the south side of the house with lines running up to the eves. Last year I noticed that the plants must have gotten too hot - some of the burs had been heat burned. They turned brown and never matured into hop cones. Have you seen anything like this on...

    70 qt Coleman extreme cooler

that's no mistake, that's called flexibility. I have the same cooler and it's perfect for 5 or 10 gal batches. Don't listen to anyone who says there's too much headspace when only doing 5 gallon batches. Just be sure to preheat the cooler with hot water before you mash in. Once it's up to...

Pitching a light beer on dark beer cake?

okay, so going to take the time to wash the yeast and dial in the pitch rate. probably best i guess, i was just looking for a shortcut. thanks for the responses.

Pitching a light beer on dark beer cake?

Intuitively seems like it shouldn't be done, but I have a chocolate stout that I need to bottle, but want to make an APA or IPA. I typically harvest/clean my yeast, but feeling lazy and just want to pitch on the cake. Will the chocolate stout yeast impart undesirable flavors on a lighter...

water depth vs grain depth - batch sparging

Well, I guess if they aren't all submerged, between the stiring and the second sparge to repeat the process, the sugars would be rinsed well enough even if not submerged...I buy that. In terms of volume of water for the sparges and the resulting volume collected in the BK, if you just take...

water depth vs grain depth - batch sparging

Wild Ginger - That doesn't sound like tun loss to me, that sounds like grain absorption. So I wouldn't really concider that volume as free water, ie you are not going to be able to capture that volume in your runnings. So on my batch sparge, what I put in I drain out. Just seems like you'd...

water depth vs grain depth - batch sparging

On my last brew, I was planning on double batch sparging. I pulled 3.5 gals out on the first runnings, was targetting 7 gals pre-boil. Double batch sparge was then 3.5gal/2 sparges, so 1.75 gallons each. But that would have left me with a bunch of grain high and dry in the mash tun. Something...

    My Hops Garden Project

awesome thread! laughed hard at the weed donation. I just put up a simliar set up on the underside of my eves. my plants are between 6-10 feet (magnum, zeus, willamette) so hoping they will reach the gutter. so here's my question - at the end of the season, how close to the ground to you...
