    Does anyone strain their wort?

I have a favorite recipe that I have brewed alot. The last three times I brewed it I have been a little pressed for time. So, I simply poured my entire brew pot hop pellets and all into primary without fussing with my usual screening routine. I may have transfered a little less beer into...

    Hello from Maryland

I grew up in Montgomery county. I lived in Kensington, Aspen Hill, and Olney, went to Sherwood High. I would probably visit and stay in those areas that are familiar. I have stayed in Baltimore a few times, Rockville, Silver Springs. I'm still an Orioles fan (even though I live in Red Sox...

    "extract twang"

what would carmelization of wort taste like? I love carmelized onions ;). Would it not impart more of a burnt sweetness rather than the tart twang that was described earlier. I have been adding my DME to the boil later b/c I heard that this increases hops utilization.

    "extract twang"

I have encountered this "twang" taste recently in a few of my beers. The common denominator of the two batches that were twangy were: the use of at least 3 lbs. of wheat DME, and the adding of extract to the full 60 min. boil. The wheat extract may have been less than fresh (--how can you...

    Hello from Maine!

Gabe is a good guy. He has helped me quite a bit. The other guy that was there (I beleive it may have been John) was kind of a dink. (there's a Maine word:D) Now he is in Farmington and Gabe is the person I see at the shop and all is well. Gabe has a homebrew pod cast that is pretty good...

    Hello from Maryland

I have duel citizenship: raised in Maryland, live in Maine, love both places. Love HB too. Actually brew more than I can drink:( My wife won't touch the styles I like, and also hates the smell of the house on brew day. Even our your daughters don't like like the scent. I think it...

    Too much hops?

Thanks for the input everone! :off: Hey Leprechaun, I grew up in Montgomery County. I havn't been back in that area as an adult. How's the micro-brew/ craft brew scene down there? Here in Maine there is a number of pretty descent pubs so I'm a little spoiled. My wife and I may be in...

    Too much hops?

At bottling some of the over bitterness has already started to subside. I may have been overreacting :o. I think late next month after aging, carbonation, and chilling it may just be pleasantly bitter. One quick note on the dry hops, however. Although this brew smells really, really...

    Too much hops?

I racked an IPA last week and couldnt resist taking a sip to see how it was doing. Holy s##t was it bittttter! Don't get me wrong I love hops to death, but I may have chosen the wrong type or amount for my recipe. I thought it would be a good recipe and it stll may mellow out and...

    Anyone notice a difference?

Thanks for the help guys. I think I'll stick with DME opposed to LME. Now I need to read up on when the best time to add it to the boil is :mug:

    Anyone notice a difference?

This is probably an old question but... In general, is there a noticable difference in the flavor and quality of dry malt extract vs. extract syrup?

    Hello from Maine!

Hey, I guess I'm kinda new to brewing. About eight years ago I brewed about ten batches with limited success :(. Discouraged, I stowed my brew stuff in the attic and forgot about it. I have recently taken my old equipment out of storage however, and am determined to get the hang of this. I...
