    Newbie Pumpkin Ale Batch

Thanks for the heads up! I think a combination of my straining methods and the ingredients caused me to end up with a little less than I expected. My buddy suggested racking it after some of the particles settled when I chilled the wort but I didn't want it to sit out for too long.

    Newbie Pumpkin Ale Batch

I've had the materials from two Brooklyn Brew kits that I brewed over 2 years ago. I decided it was time to try my hand at brewing again, this time following a Pumpkin Ale recipe that my friend had. I was a little intimidated since I didn't have very specific instructions in front of me this...

    Scaling a recipe

Thanks Ron, I haven't looked at that book - I'll check it out! Since I have two, 1-gallon carboys, would it make sense to divide by 5 and then multiply by two? I've read that scaling up can change addition times and temps. I'm fine with not worrying about it if it's not going to ruin the...

    Scaling a recipe

Hi all, A couple of years ago I brewed a couple of 1 gallon kit batches from Brooklyn Brew. I'm back to try my hand at homebrewing again but I'm apprehensive. This time I'll be starting from scratch rather than a kit so I'm trying to search for a reliable all-grain recipe to work off of...

First Brew - Brooklyn Brewery Everyday IPA kit

Would it be harmful to move to a secondary for a week this late? I'm two weeks into fermentation but I'd like to have a cleaner tasting beer if I can. From what I understand, this will allow the remaining yeast to 'clean up' and fall out of solution? It will also eliminate my chances of...

First Brew - Brooklyn Brewery Everyday IPA kit

Hi Calichusetts, thanks for all of your insight. Since I'm not using a secondary I think I'll bottle and let it condition for two weeks and then stick the bottles in the fridge for a week to clear up. Or can I bottle and go straight to the fridge? I'm not sure if/how temperature will effect...

    Bottling with a plastic fermenter

Both very important and valid things to consider, thanks!

    Bottling with a plastic fermenter

This may be a naive question but I'm thinking about getting a 6.5 gallon fermenting bucket and I was curious to know about the trub that will settle at the bottom. If I chose to bottle straight from the bucket (which I most likely would) will I get trub in my siphon or is the valve typically...

First Brew - Brooklyn Brewery Everyday IPA kit

Should I trash the beer that is just barely above the trub or is there a practical way to salvage it and avoid siphoning sediment? Also, I'm approaching my 14th day of fermentation and I'm curious about cold crashing to clarify the beer and get some of the remaining active yeast to settle out...

First Brew - Brooklyn Brewery Everyday IPA kit

Thanks a lot for all of the replies. It's comforting knowing I'm in good shape and on my way to enjoying a tasty homemade brew. I had another quick question about bottling. I know I'm supposed to keep the racking cane about an inch above the trub but should I still use some sort of filter...

First Brew - Brooklyn Brewery Everyday IPA kit

Hi all - first post here on the forums. I had some questions about my first brew that I started about a week ago. I'm using the 1 gallon IPA kit from Brooklyn Brewery. The first steps went fine - but I had some questions about the fermentation. First, I've noticed that there's been no...
