    New Illinois home brewer

    Welcome! (from the Oswego/Plainfield border)

(yet another) My 1st AG BIAB tonight!

I know I'm a bit late to the party but just a thought about your process...instead of holding the bag over the pot, rest it on a baking cooling rack that straddles the top of the pot. That will save your arm strength

    Favorite pairings with Motueka

I made an IPA fermented with Mangos. (5.5 gal with mangos, 5.5 w/o) I paired it with Galaxy and Citra hops. Real nice mix of hops

Question about full volume mash BIAB

I've used Beersmith for over 6 years while doing 3V brewing but had some trouble when setting it up for BIAB. I use http://biabcalculator.com to check my numbers and it has been very reliable so far (in the 20+ BIAB batches that I've done)

    Help with Mash Recirculation

I recirculate as long as I can and stop when it starts to cavitate. I will turn the pump back on every so often to move wort through the lines. I also run through the RIMS while cooling (when I use my IC and not my plate chiller). It helps me keep an eye on my cooling temps

    Help with Mash Recirculation

I've only recirculated outside the bag when I brewed a barley wine and had issues with the flow rate through the bag being too slow and starving the pump. Not that this is scientifically proven by any means but I would think that recirculating through the bag would help keep the mash temp...

    10 Gallon Corny

Not mine but saw this on CL. A bit more than I'd pay but you might be able to move the price. 10 Gallon Ball Lock Homebrew Keg Corny $200 http://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/for/5270986328.html

    Help with Mash Recirculation

Sorry for delay. I was trying to figure out how to display a table but the best I could come with is to do a quick screenshot of a spreadsheet. These are some of the beers I have been charting. My RIS and Barleywine brews were certainly outliers in terms of the data, a pain in the a$$ for...

    Help with Mash Recirculation

This thread has gotten a little off-topic but I thought I'd chime in again as well. Since I started BIAB with my RIMS tube I have been taking readings during my mash. I take readings with my refractometer at 5 minute intervals and stirring in between the readings. My thought was that I would...

    Help with Mash Recirculation

I've had the same problem. Too much grain slows the draining and starves the pump. I throttle back the pump and recirculate outside the bag when I have a large grain bill. I figure that the thermal mass of the grains retains the heat and my RIMS tube setup will account for variation in temps. I...

    Carboy Cap

I've never had a problem with the seal on carboys. And, I've used them when I ferment in sankey kegs. With enough coaxing, you can fit them over the coupler stem. I use co2 to push the beer out of the fermenters. A long stainless racking cane in the larger "tube" and a fitting I bought at Home...

    Fruit Beer Requiem Raspberry

I've brewed this 3 times since April. Served it at beer fest with my homebrew club: one of the first kegs to kick! Served it at a wedding this past weekend: first keg to kick! The remaining keg in my keezer is almost gone. Time to brew it again! I brewed the original recipe as posted with no...

Illinois Cold Plate - 2 pass

I got a 2-pass cold plate as part of another CL deal. I have no need for it since I already have other ones. The plate is 27" in length, 12" wide and 5" tall (including the basket that it sits on and the ports on top.) The basket will be included in the price. Looking for $50 and buyer...

    Virginia Shirron plate chiller

Wort goes in....but it never comes out! Or...this magical device changes wort to water. No wonder why you're selling it! [emoji3]
