what is wrong with my hops?

My cascade looks exactly like that. Just like day_trippr stated - check the undersides of the leaves. I did and found spider mites, or the really fine webbing on the leaves. I sprayed with an insect soap. Can these little buggers kill a hop plant off, or just screw up a season?

Clone Beer Founder's Breakfast Stout Clone

I have never bottled anything with that high a gravity before. I noticed some others finishing with a high FG, but not 1.032 high. If that's where it finishes then that's where it finishes, or is adding different yeast necessary to avoid bottle bombs? Even at 4 weeks young the sample...

Clone Beer Founder's Breakfast Stout Clone

Hey there, I have a question about my last 2 SG readings of 1.032 (readings were a week apart). I brewed 20 gallons of this and had a OG of 1.086. About 30 minutes into the mash the 155 temp dropped. This kicked on the pump to start recirculating through the herms but i failed to notice the...

Light oak chips to replace medium oak cubes

In my experience chips impart flavor very very quickly and can be a bit harsh. I only use cubes now. It seems i can age brew on the cubes longer and the oak flavor is more rounded. If you're going to use the chips i would recommend tasting often. Either way it sounds like an awesome brew!

sugar in homemade fruit extract and bottling?

Hey there all, I made a 16 gallon batch of a simple blonde recipe and mashed at 160 to leave unfermentable sugar. 12 gallons fermented clean with us05 and finished at 1.015, brett b. and used oak spirals (zinfandel) from a local winery were added. The 4 remaining gallons were fermented with...

Drying Fresh Picked Hops w/ Fridge

I'm sure there are some high priced gadgets out there, but would a reptile humidity gauge work? I use to get them for 6 or so bucks or so. Might be worth a try. When i cold crash I usually take the airlock or blowoff off and cover with sanitized foil until it's as cold as it's going to...

    Hops and pool water... Help!

Thanks for the replies! It's not looking good but will hope for the best. If the bines do die back, is the rhizome toast as well?

    Hops and pool water... Help!

So far all I have added is chlorine as needed to stay at 2-3 ppm in a 20k gal pool, and a dose of algaecide a few weeks ago. The pH is is 7.5 so I haven't had to add acid. So over watering maybe? That sounds easier to tend to than chemical issues!

    Hops and pool water... Help!

Hello all! I am new to owning a pool and made a big mistake! I have 2 cascade and 2 centennial growing from rhizomes planted in ground 2 months ago. The tallest is about 6ft. This weekend I was doing some pool maintenance and turned on the fill valve to add a little bit of water. I forgot I...

First year plant with tip damage

Happy memorial day all! I came back from a short vacation and one of my plants looks like the tip was dried up. All 4 plants are on drip system and the ground stays around field capacity and slightly dries towards the end of the day. The other plants look great. This one now has side 2 new...

Cocoa powder in the boil and using a plate chiller. Problems?

I have used nibs in the boil and secondary. I prefer them in the secondary. The powder sure does make a sludge in the kettle as well as the carboy! I bet there wouldn't be a problem running through the plate chiller, but i wouldn't chance it. Could you boil up a small amount of water to mix...

    Its a sad day...

Congrats on the first beer! I am trying to kick a keg to make room for tomorrow's batch. Sucks using the same refrigerator as a fermentation chamber and kegerator.
