    mauribrew yeast??

I go through about a brick a year and experimented with different pitch quantities, building it up into a starter, re-constituting it prior to pitch, etc... but never did any temperature trials. I found that 12g is a good safe pitch rate dry (for 5 gal batches). I aerate the wort quite a bit and...

Mashing in the oven instead of a tun

I just tried this with a full mash (feel the burn in those biceps, baby). I got the mash (11# grain) up to 155 on the stovetop and pre-heated the oven to 170f (lowest possible). Turned off the oven and put the mash tun w/ lid into the oven. Used the dial thermo on the front of it to track the...

    Amber Bock Clone?

I'm going to try this one, but use Crystal 120 since I don't have any 90. It's my evil stepmother's favorite beer. If I can keep her lubricated with this stuff, Christmas will go much smoother. Thanks Big Ed! I'll let y'all know how it goes.

Can't decide B3 or Brew Magic

And you could probably fit 2 Sabcos in it too ;o)

    Belgian quad conditing question...

If you want to get fancy, try SPUNDING. Of course, it's too late for this batch, probably, since you need to transfer from primary to keg before all 'primary' fermentation is complete. In other words, rack into a keg while you still have fairly active fermentation (3 to 4 days after pitching)...

    Testing fermentability of crystal malt

Excellent work, nilo. I ran across this thread while I was tweaking my estimated OG field in my brewing spreadsheet. I had been using 50% efficiency for crystal malts and have now upped it to the 72% I use for base malts since I never go above 20% in the grain bill for crystals. Maybe now I'll...

    RIMS VS HERMS, what if?

I was doing a little research and couldn't resist. I shouldn't bash too much though, I have a Chickalob Ultra clone in the fridge for my neighbor who replaced my mailbox when it got smashed while I was out of town.

    RIMS VS HERMS, what if?

... yea, and I'm sure my pee still tastes like it did when I was a curious tot, but I'm not going to drink it ever again either.

Stir, RIMS, HERMS ... non-insulated systems.

While in the process of building a stirring system for my Mash tun, I read thru old posts and it seems like a new survey might be in order. Obviously, there's time and cost associated with adding a stirring, RIMS or HERMS so the focus should be on results or expected results of this investment...

How many gallons of homebrew in 2010?

Wow ... 28,927 gallons this year. Assuming this was B-M-C, that would be over $150,000 in missed tax revenue for Uncle Obama.

Anyone know the fermentable content % of fingers?

    Finished my motorized mill

I apologize for resurrecting this old post, but I didn't motorize my mill 2 years ago. After combing the web for info, I have put together a concise list of all the Grainger parts you need to motorize (1725 or 1750 rpm motor) the 4" mill that MoreBeer offers. Quite frankly, I'm surprised they...
