Beer line tests & solution to the "plastic" taste

Further update on the Tygon Silver: Disconnected beer lines a month ago, and unplugged keezer (went on vacation... didn't want drunk neighbor pilfering beer). Keezer plugged back in a cold a week later, and I just hooked the lines back up. Beer sat in the disconnected, warm line for 3-4 weeks...

Beer line tests & solution to the "plastic" taste

Yes, I use Tygon Silver. No oxidized-beer taste I can detect.

Beer line tests & solution to the "plastic" taste

Well, according to the calculator I found HERE, I'd say 4-6 feet (I'd go closer to 6', due to the lower internal friction of the Tygon)... It seems people have good luck with the calculations in that spreadsheet, but YMMV. Personally, I didn't feel like dicking around with tuning line length...

Beer line tests & solution to the "plastic" taste

I'd like proof for your claim that thin-walled tubing causes oxidation. The Tygon Silver 3/16"ID tubing has been great so far... No discernible plastic (or any other off-) taste at all. The only downside I've come across is that it's expensive compared to other lines. And regardless of the...

Beer line tests & solution to the "plastic" taste

Well, it's been several months, but I've finally got my keezer up and running. So far, with 12.5 feet of 3/16" Tygon Silver tubing, I have not noticed any off flavors. The longest the beer has sat in the line is roughly 24 hours. I'll try to let it sit longer, but the novelty (read...

Residual water in brew cart lines

As much as I tried to design the plumbing on my new brew cart to fully drain, there are the inevitable lines that don't. After wet testing, I can see that after a brew/CIP/rinse cycle, some water will be trapped in a couple of lines. How hard do I need to try and get this water out? I plan on...

    Show us your Kegerator

A Love temp controller. I mounted it in the plastic grate that covers the compressor on the bottom left side. I wanted it accessible, but more or less hidden. I may eventually apply some window tint to make it less bright, as it casts a red glow on the wall.

    Show us your Kegerator

I just completed my keezer. I took inspiration from here, though I came up with a different means of attaching the drip tray. The keezer: For the drip tray mount, I bought 2 15" hanging plant hooks from Lowe's. I bent them slightly, both to make the tray sit level, and to center it under the...

    My brew rig: The Omnibrew

UPDATE! I finally got around to doing some more work on my rig. First, a mockup of the general component layout: Based on various ideas gleaned from other HBT-ers, I came up with a rather simple method to support my mash basket to allow the spent grains to drain: This is the support in...

    Service cart for stand

I'll be using one for my single-vessel system, though mine is the larger 24"X36" cart. It's rated to hold 450lbs (way more than a full kettle), though I'll be using a square steel beam between the center of the shelves, which will help make it a lot less flimsy. I flipped the top shelf...

    SWMBO Finally Broke Down

Glad I'm not the only one whose mind went in this direction. Tell her about the ease of un-modification of a keezer and collar. "But honey, if I ever get out of beer making, we'll have a perfectly usable freezer! Whereas a fridge with a hole in it is only good as a kegerator, and nothing...

    Keezer with Aluminum collar

Very nice keezer. Did you paint the seal? And if so, what paint did you use?

    Grounding element vs groundinv kettle?

I drilled the hole with a #10 drill bit until it just broke through the other side. The flange isn't as big on the thread side, so I ended up with half a hole, which was fine (as I only needed to fill solder from that side). I used a small needle file to deburr the hole. Then I stripped the...
