    Mash Tun Size

Buy your cooler at walmart, get a coleman extreeme. I have a 72qt but I do 10gallon brews. You don't need to go that large but the price difference is so small you might find its $10 more. The cheapest way to make a mash tun is this... http://hbd.org/cascade/dennybrew/ Don't get...

Equipment suggestions for 5 gallon all grain

ok, a couple basic suggestions. 1. Don't waste your time with a 10g rubbermaid. Just go an buy a 72qt coleman extreme it will be the same or cheaper than the rubbermaid and then you'll be set to do 5-10 gallon mashes without having to ever worry about space. Get the cooler kit from bargain...

    Bayou Classic too damn hot!

    1. Throw in the steeping grains. 2. Turn the burner on. 3. By the time it gets up to 170 degrees you'll be done steeping. 4. Pull grains out and enjoy.

New guy looking for an equipment check.

ok a couple things of importance here. 1. Better bottles are NOT heat safe so do not use hot water over 140. 2. When you mix star san, use distilled water and mix a gallon up at a time, then fill the squirt bottle. It will keep for months and months. It's not super expensive but why waste it...

New guy looking for an equipment check.

    1. Check the "Carboy" it may in fact be a 6.5 in carboy. 2. Boil about 2.5 gallons. Once its chilled to about 100 degrees dump in your chilled spring water. You'll be below 80 degrees and it will be pitchable. 3. You can bottle it about 3 weeks later. :) Welcome to your new addiction....

    wort chiller leak!

My only concerns in that non food grade hoses are often contaminated with lead, and the water could likely have a bunch of chlorine in it. Hoses are not for drinking for sure....

    Too cold to brew?

I second the get some water from the store and definitely mash inside. You can put your wort into a bucket and take out to the patio. Just take out the first running and then the batches unless you're fly then well take out the whole thing. Also, leave the "tank" inside and close the patio...

    Popped my cherry

First ever brew @ all grain, or first all grain batch... Either way congrats. Heffes are awesome as long as you have fermentation temp control.

Irish Stout (ie Guiness Draught) Extract recipe anyone ?

Its going to be a bit tricky to get an extract version because most of them have flaked barley which needs to be mashed. Beersmith when I convert my simple all grain dry stout recipe it replaces the flaked barley with carafoam instead of 2 lbs of flaked barley. Recipe: Dry Stout -...

Mash pH with steeping and cold-steeping dark grains.

Might is just be easier to grab some distilled water, or spring water.

We suspect chlorophenols in our beers, but we have no clue what causes them to appear

Couple Ideas: 1. You should be using StarSan or Iodophor. My preference is starsan as its better is about every way than Iodophor. I am not going to detail about these as there are hundreds of posts on it here already. 2. I suggest, you look at this again in about 5 more weeks...
