Please contact me via craigslist, I don't monitor HBT as closely, thanks.
Ed, it sounds as though with the fume hood in place, you could start using the hut for indoor brewing now if you wanted, or am I overlooking something?
I've heard about Jamil's views on using more yeast than a single container, and I've got no reason to disagree, I just haven't tried it yet - I need another part for my DIY stir plate, but that's another story. Good to know that seems to be such an important factor.
So while I can well...
Question for the lager brewers out there:
I have had problems with several recent lager batches with fermentation either starting later than normal (I like to see lagers start bubbling about 12 hrs after pitching) or not at all (forcing a quick use of dry yeast). I use single Wyeast...
I guess this gets to a basic question about malting. In addition to developing some of the enzymes that are not already present (by beginning the germination process), I thought that malting helped to break down cell walls in the endosperm to make the starch more accessible, and thus raise the...
5# Domestic Pilsner (Barley Malt)
3# White Wheat (Malt)
1# Unmalted Wheat
8oz carapils (Malt)
(As said before, it's from a recipe kit that I wanted to use up before it sat around much longer. I wasn't going for a wit style in this brew, but this was "close enough" and I'm hoping that the end...
hmmm...the trouble there is I'm not sure if that very low number (1.025, as opposed to say 35-38 for various forms of base barley malts) is primarily due to being unmalted or roasted.
The roasted malts seem to drop from say 38 all the way down to 25 for black patent malt. So if roasting...
I've been trying without success to determine what yield I can expect from unmalted wheat (as one might find in say a Witbier recipe). Palmer's table of "Typical Malt Yields (in PPG)" does not list unmalted wheat. I've also found no mention of yield on this forum or the internet homebrew shops...
According to Homebrewers Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, or H-GAAP, that $1K of tools doesn't count to the final project cost. It's the same logic that allows one to state that homebrewed beer is cheaper... as long as you ignore the cost of all of the equipment used to make it :)...
I just came across this thread today. Enjoying watching things come together. I hadn't previously thought about constructing a brewhaus, but it did get me thinking :) Looking forward to future developments!
An interesting aspect to using temperature controllers for brewing is where exactly the probe goes. If you leave it open to the air inside your fridge, then the temp of the beer is likely to stay bounded as the air temp rises and falls around it...but also since fermentation is exothermic, it...
Frigidaire 8.8 cu ft. 4 five gallon kegs fit comfortably (don't think 5 would fit, but not sure since I only have 4 to try out). I also have a Frigidaire 7.2 cu ft model (fits 3 kegs, definitely not 4) which used to be my kegerator until I received the 8.8 model. I plan on using the 7.2 as a...
I did the first 16 batches extract, then went straight to allgrain and am on my 8th AG. I realized on about match 6 that extract was hindering the potential quality, and would have made the jump sooner but for the cost of the mash tun, wort chiller, and SS kettle.
Have now done a total of 5 all grain batches. Using appropriate wyeast strains, 1 lager, 1 wheat, 3 ale. The ales and wheat all show krausen and/or airlock bubbles by 5-6 hours after pitching (as opposed to 12+ when the malt came from extract). I don't have enough lager batches of either type...
