For now, no... the elements and controller are designed to be used together (right plugs, right power level) It is a turn key setup for someone who takes it all.

Never had any problems, and have not had to replace the batteries.
I did learn to calibrate it with water every brew session - takes just a few seconds.
A digital refractometer is a pretty nice time saver, since it can measure OG with just 2 drops. I find I'm not brewing enough anymore to justify it and would like to put the money into something else (like a canonical fermentor). I've had mine for about a year and used it probably 100 times...
