how much sparging water do you use? Is there a general rule of gallons per pound of grains? I have typically sparged the grains until the color of the water coming out was pretty clear. With stouts and porters that will never happen. The I have sparged with a couple of gallons.

When I have not used a starter, it has taken 2-3 days before krausen started. The air lock raised after about 12 hours though. It was difficult to be patient through all of that. In the end the beer turned out fine.

For me, if the bottle doesn't have crud on the bottom and is clean to the eye, I just use the bottle washer to rinse out with hot water. Let the bottle drain, sanitize, and fill.
