First IPA, Thoughts on hop schedule?

You will get all sorts of flavor with flame out additions, not just aroma. A lot of professional brewers are doing most of their hop additions in a whirlpool after the wort is done boiling. This provides all sorts of flavor and aroma as well as a high utilization of alpha.

SS Boil shield on a Blichmann kettle

I was thinking about adding one of those stainless boil shields on the end of the diptube to filter out the whole hops. My question to those that have one of these shields is do you think they would be bendable enough to put on the end of the diptube? I wanted to take the 1/2" fitting off and...

2 aerations, 2 empty tanks...this is getting pricey...

I have the same system from Williams and have aerated at least 30 batches with one tank and it is still going. I would say you either have a leak somewhere or your regulator isn't working properly.

What to put in a rum barrel?

I have a 5gal medium rum barrel. Any suggestions to what I should put in it? Originally I was going to get a bourbon barrel and put a RIS in it, but it got changed and now I am not sure what to use this for.

Yeast starter - should I pitch entire thing or just yeast sediment?

Usually I make the starter a few days in advance on a stir plate. I let it settle overnight in the refrigerator before brew day. I then bring it out and let it get up to pitching temp, then decant and pitch just the slurry. But, if you are making the starter on brew day you can pitch the whole...

Well, welcome to the hobby. Theres alot of starter kits online from morebeer, northern brewer, austin homebrew supply, williams brewing etc. Also check your local homebrew store if you have one. They can usually give you some helpful advise when your ready. :mug:

    Mr.Beer Question.

I also got started on Mr. Beer so I do not like to knock it, but the first batch I made with it was horrible and I dumped it down the drain. Good thing I allready had a 5 gal batch I made from lme or else I probably would not be brewing still. I even tried to make another batch after I had been...

    Dogfish 120 Minute Imperial IPA

I enjoyed it on tap, but I probably wouldn't order it again. There is so much residual sugar left in it, that it is nearly impossible to balance it with bitterness. Also, a lot of hop flavor gets lost in it as well from all the sweetness.

Bottled my first pumpkin ale yesterday - things I've learned

if you are doing all grain, consider mashing the pumpkin next time. it will convert some of the sugars and you won't have to deal with the mess of seperating it later.

    Forgot to make a starter!

Pitch it all into the starter. At the very least it will wake the yeast up. Most of the growth will be done by 12 hours so that would be an ideal time to pitch.
