I guess I have this same question about hops in a hop bag as well. Before I was just putting the hop pellets into the wort, but this time, I put the hops into the hop bags because the recipe called for it. Is it ok to squeeze those guys while they're in the wort? I'm not too worried about it...
So my last two batches have used grains for steeping, and I've found myself asking these questions each time. Figured it was about time I take it to you guys.
Is it ok to let the grain bag sink to the bottom of the kettle, or should I tie it up to the handle to keep it off the bottom? I've...
Good morning. I've been in contact with a guy who's willing to sell me a carboy for only $15, but he says that it has some staining because he left Star San in it too long. Should I be worried about this affecting the functionality of the carboy?
Being new to homebrewing and all, I bought a turkey fryer off of craigslist and didn't really inspect everything at first. Upon looking closer at the stainless steel pot (the main reason why I bought it) I can see swirling surface scratches at the bottom of the pot. There are no gauges or...
My directions said to fill to the 5 gallon mark in the carboy so I did just that. I didn't measure how much it was before topping it off. I just topped off.
For my last batch, I mixed the boiled wort and the 3 gallons of water in my ale pail, and then used my hydrometer and adjusted for the temperature. 1.03 + .001 = 1.031
This the amber kit:
bring 1 1/2 gallons of water to boil
remove kettle from heat and add extract ( I didn't remove it from the heat, but stirred vigorously to avoid scorching)
return to heat and add hops
boil 60 minutes
pour 3 gallons cold water to bucket
add wort to bucket, mix, and transfer to...
Yes. Extract brewing. I've used two kits from my local brew store (an amber and a belgian wit). Each time, I've boiled 1.5 gallons of water with hops for 60 minutes. Cooled with my wort chiller. Mixed with 3 gallons of water. Put in fermenter and topped off.
Could it have something to do with a...
I've now got two batches under my belt, but it seems as if I'm having a hard time reaching my intended original gravity. I think I should be reaching 1.045 but it seems as if I'm barely scraping 1.03. Being new to the brew process, I need some help troubleshooting this problem. I've come up with...
Good morning. I started my first home brew on the day after Christmas. It was around midnight of 12/27 that I pitched the yeast. I'm worried that I didn't aggitate it enough, and some of it got stuck at the top part of the carboy. I've got krausen and I've got some action in the carboy right now...
