Default First Time Soda - Boil???

Making soda for the first time this weekend. Why do most recipes not call for boiling the water and syrup before adding yeast and bottling? Aren't there potential nasties in the extract??

I notice the same thing for hard lemonade which I might also try this weekend. Why no boil??

Alan
