Tonight, I did my first partial mash brew and I have to say it was a lot of fun. Definitely felt more involved than extract plus specialty grains. I was a bit skeptical that it would feel any different than the previous dozen or so, but it definitely was a change. I changed up my recipe at the last minute while at my LHBS and I am glad that I did.
I brewed a Belgian Wit using mostly DeathBrewer's PM method except that I have an outside turkey burner for my full boil. My mash efficiency was very low (~55%) leading to a bunch of questions for future brews, but I think that this is part of the fun! I feel that tracking down my efficiency issue will really help me for when I eventually go all grain.
If you are an extract brewer looking for a new challenge I highly recommend trying a partial mash.
