Default Oats for stout

To brew an oatmeal stout, can I use Quaker oatmeal in the cardboard cylinder as is into my mash, or do I have to roast them first. Thanks

Johannes

I toast them at 350°F for 10 minutes on each side for a little added mouthfeel.

If you have regular oatmeal that requires cooking (~30 minutes), cook it before adding it to the mash. Quick oats can go straight into the mash. Do not use instant oatmeal.

Roasting mainly changes the flavor and isn't required.

You can grind them if you want - you will get a bit more fermentable sugar from them if you do. I just pulse them for about 15-20 seconds in my food processor.
