I just discovered a bag of mixed grain I crushed 5 or so months ago for a batch, and then never got around to brewing. It's been stored in a cool, dry dark place, but 5 months is a long time.

What do you think? Toss it? Or might it still be used to brew a good beer?

1. Sniff test. Does it smell old? If not...
2. Taste test. Does is taste stale? If not...
3. Put a small amount in water that is heated to about 158. Give it 10 minutes and taste the wort. Does it taste sweet? If so...
4 Brew beer.:p

A friend of mine that runs a medium sized craft brewery gets his grain pre-milled and sometimes it sits for 6 months or more. They have very tight quality control and seem OK with it. I buy my bulk grain from him and have never had a problem that could be traced to that.
