On the verge of brewing my first batch. Bought equipment that came with a Brewers Best Oktoberfest kit. Yeast is to old to be trustworthy. What yeast would be a good replacement, not ready to try lager fermentation yet.

Thanks
Pat

For an oktoberfest you are going to need a lager strain and the ability to lager.
Mrmalty.com can help you decide if it is worth it to make a starter or buy new yeast.

If you have the ability to pitch and ferment in the 48-50*F range, do it as a lager. Otherwise, do it with an ale yeast. If you can keep it around 60, Nottingham would work well.

There's a few Oktoberfest recipes here on HBT that use kolsch yeasts to achieve a very lager-like flavour.
