I screwed up. Now I have a stupid question.

If you had a 5 gallon batch of wort with a gravity of 1.080 and added 1 gallon of water to it, what would the gravity be?

Edit: beat me to it

Here is the math anyways:

5 gal x 1.080 + 1 gal x 1.000 = 6.400

6.400 / 6 gal = 1.067

Simpler way of thinking:

1.080 means 80 points of sugars per gallon.

5 gallons of 1.080 wort means 5 gallons X 80 points per gallon, or 400 points of sugars.

Add one gallon of water without sugar and we now have the same 400 points of sugars in 6 gallons.

That means 400 points per 6 gallons, or 400 / 6 = 66.6 points, which is the same as 1.067.

ok, raise your hands if you were one of those guys who complained to the math teacher that you would never use algebra after high school

but even if you didn't brew, you would still be using it every time you count money

Just goes to show adding more water is the devil:tank:

*raises hand*

I didn't anticipate it, but I used to use algebra on a daily basis when I was on the sub, but now that I am on shore duty, I only use it for brewing and the occasional bit of curiosity I find myself pursuing.

I don't think counting money is algebra, though. Algebra is more about the relationships between numbers while counting money is simply arithmetic.

Sorry to go OT.

counting change: number of quarters times the value of a quarter plus the number of dimes times the value of a dime plus the number of nickels times the value of a nickel plus the number of pennies times the value of a penny = $

.25q + .1d + .05n + .01p = $

looks like an algebraic equation to me. you just do it so quick in your head that it seems like simple arithmetic

apologies for the threadjack

When I started homebrewing, I was told there would be no math. The truth is, after a couple of pints the math all goes away, and the world is a better place.
