I have a general procedure before I brew a style i have to make. I will try the commercial versions of the product that I want to brew However this one eludes me.

I have tried Weihenstephaner Original Premium and it has the "Imported Funk" as I refer to it. I have also tried Stoudt's Golden Lager, and this one had a lot more hop character than i expected, not that this was unpleasant. Unfortunately the Stoudt's is the only domestic Helles i can find in my local liquor stores. How close is this to style?

I would say stoudt's is a good style examples. It is listed in the BJCP style examples for Munich Helles. I would also suggest if you are ever near Adamstown, pa you stop by and visit the brewpub.
