Quick question i have a lot of recipes that use East Kent Golding hops, can i use US Goldings as a substitute? HOPS DIRECT has a great deal on a pound of US GOLDING hops.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yes you can use Goldings as a substitute I do it all the time. I have used First Gold hops too and they work really well in place of EKG.

I guess i will go with the US Golding according to the Hops reference chart. The recipes i am looking at is Jamis ESB, Robust Porter, Southern English Brown Ale and other recipes in his book.

IMHO, as long as you stay in the relative "family" (i.e use an English hop as a sub for another English hop)they sub pretty well easily. there are some exceptions tho'.

They did have East Kent Goldings LEAF. I ordered a pound a week ago, and it just shipped. EKG are not showing up on their menu now though. I sure hope I get EK and not US. I'm sure I couldn't tell the difference, but if I had wanted US, I would have paid less for them...

In my most recent beer, I used Styrian instead. Not sure that was a great sub, but it was all my LHBS had.
