I just started trying 1 gallon BIAB batches of higher gravity beers & tried a scaled down DIPA recipe today. However, my OG came out WAY too low as expected by BeerSmith. Here's the recipe:
Total Water Needed: 2.21 gal
Grain absorption: .21 gal
Boil off: 1 gal/hr
2.50 lb Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) Grain 1 83.6 %
0.30 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 40L (40.0 SRM) Grain 2 10.0 %
0.08 lb Cara-Pils/Dextrine (2.0 SRM) Grain 3 2.8 %
0.11 lb Corn Sugar (Dextrose) (0.0 SRM) Sugar 4 3.5 %
0.25 oz Columbus (Tomahawk) [13.90 %] - Boil 60.0 min Hop 5 75.5 IBUs
0.25 oz Centennial [9.80 %] - Boil 5.0 min Hop 6 10.6 IBUs
0.50 oz Simcoe [12.70 %] - Aroma Steep 0.0 min Hop 7 0.0 IBUs
0.37 oz Centennial [9.80 %] - Dry Hop 13.0 Days Hop 9 0.0 IBUs
0.37 oz Columbus (Tomahawk) [13.90 %] - Dry Hop 13.0 Days Hop 10 0.0 IBUs
0.25 oz Simcoe [12.70 %] - Dry Hop 13.0 Days Hop 11 0.0 IBUs
0.37 oz Centennial [9.80 %] - Dry Hop 5.0 Days Hop 12 0.0 IBUs
0.37 oz Columbus (Tomahawk) [13.90 %] - Dry Hop 5.0
0.25 oz Simcoe [12.70 %] - Dry Hop 5.0 Days Hop 14 0.0 IBUs
Now, BeerSmith said the pre-boil gravity should be 1.040, which I hit at 1.041. However, after boiling for 60 mins, I only came out at 1.054 - nowhere near the 1.085 predicted by BeerSmith.
Any ideas what went wrong here? I've looked at other 5 gallon DIPA recipes & did a quick divide by 5 to see if my grain #'s were approximate & they about matched. What am I missing here? Seems odd. I thought the huge swing from the pre-boil gravity of 1.040 to post-boil of 1.085 was odd, but just went with the software.
Ideas here? I want to start brewing some smaller batches of huger gravity stuff. I keg & don't really want 5 gallons of 9% DIPA......
Thanks!
