Just did a Columbus SMaSH . Recipe by MrFinn

2.88 Gallon batch
4Lbs 4oz 2 row
4 oz toasted 2 row 375 degrees for 40 minutes
1 Lb toasted 2 row 300 degrees for 25 minutes
.25 @ first hop
.25 @ 60
.25 @ 15
.25 @ 10
.25 @ 5
.75 @ 1

MrFinn used wyeast 1272 but I am using notty since that is all I have on hand .

Used leaf from Fresh Hops . Seemed a little old and low on flavor to me . I think they were the 2012 crop . Probably should have used twice the amount .Used 10% extra for the leaf .

will post OG and the like later . Still chilling it

OG 1.062 side note : MrFinn original Gravity was 1.053 . beer Smith says 1.059 . Keeping in mind that I added in a bit over a pound of rice to jump up aBV

I just ordered a lb of CTZ from Niko, I wonder how they compare in terms of supplier. Nothin like a Columbus IPA

The smell of this SMaSH was horrible . Smells like old wet clothes and dirty gym socks in a hamper for 2 months . did not taste much better right out of the boil pot .
should improve after fermenting I am sure . columbus do have a potent pungent smell .
I really liked mine that i grew . only got a couple hops for some reason but I put them in a glass and poured blonde over it and it was tasty .

the price was right from Fresh hops . Shipped fast. they only had the 2012 crop left but I got some kent goldings and fuggles 2013 crop for my next nut brown

SMaSH is tasting pretty good now . just bottled it . Drank a glass right out of fermenter and it has a nice aroma and hop flavor . FG of 1.023

Drinking one now for brunch I guess it is . quite good . Drinking out of the bottle so am not getting the full flavor as from a glass . Has a nice chocolate / coffee aftertaste from the toasted grain and a little bitter . The hop taste has died down .
Might go with more hops on the next one . I like it .

Does hopping like this affect mouthfeel/texture for you? Is it affected by the fg in any way?

Mouthfeel seems to be pretty much the same as any stronger beer . FG may be a bit lower than I record but I am not positive . My hydrometer broke and after I bought this one my FG is always about 1.012 on normal beers . Should be about 1.010 or less .
I have a new recipe I am thinking on . I posted it on wichitahomebrewers.org
but this one turned out quite tasty . I under carbbed it a little . I have drinking it warm as I think strong ales taste better warm . made with fresh hops or pellets would probably make a much tastier brew also as I used 2012 whole leaf and I think they were a bit low on flavor

Well I decided to make another SMaSH and this time I think I am going to use Belle Saison yeast . Seems like it might make a good beer . I hope .
edit :
found out I do not have enough 2 row so i have made a new recipe . It is going to be great tasting stuff unless it is horrible .

4 gallon batch
1.062 SG
EST FG 1.018
72.7 IBU
17 SRM ( wanted more dark color but do not feel like toasting malt)
5.8% abv unless I go get more rice or add in some everclear to bump it up . everclear...yum.

7.0 Lbs 2 row
12 oz special B
8.0 oz victory
8.0 oz crystal 10L
4.0 oz biscuit
.75 Lb rice
Columbus Hops
.34 oz first wort
.50 oz @60 minutes
.34 @15
.50 @10
.50 @ 5
1.0 oz @ 1
belle saison yeast

so let me know what you think . brewing tomorrow since it is 30 degrees out today and I can use less propane tomorrow .
