Default Penrose kettle for mash tun

Has anyone used a Penrose kettle for a mash tun? I am starting to develop a game plan for an electric setup and I can see no issue with using a Penrose kettle for a HLT or a boil kettle but the lack of a lid is a small step to overcome. Any input is appreciated.

I've used one on my last couple batches. Needed a bigger mash tun than my 10 gallon Rubbermaid as I'm experimenting with no-sparge and parti gyle brewing here of late. Installed a copper manifold on the bottom, wrapped with an old sleeping bag to hold temps. Only lost 3 degrees in my hour mash. Worked great!

What are you using for a lid?

A pizza pan......This summer I'll worry about making it look nicer, wanting to start recirculating the wort with a pump set-up.

i also used pizza pans. took a couple pieces of SS round stock and drilled a hole/tapped them so that they act as weights to the pan doesn't fly away in a breeze. not much else you can do since the pot isn't round.

A lid shouldn't be a point to worry about...

He meant it exactly the way he wrote it. The pot is not perfectly round...

Cheers!
