I work in a doctors office and I need to bottle tonight. I know I am extremely low on Iodophor, and don't really have time to run to my LHBS, so I am curious if I could "borrow" some Betadine to use to sanitize my bottles and whotnot or if they are very different from one another and that would be a horrible idea. Thanks.

yes, I've been using it for a long time w/ no problems. Recently I went to Tractor Supply and picked up a 1 gal jug for ~ $12. No more expensive iodophor for me!

Do you use it as a no-rinse, or do you make sure and rinse everything before you use it?

Yes betadine works fine for starch testing
Yes betadine works fine for sanitization

I have been rinsing with boiled water just because most commercial skin prep betadine or povidone iodine has some surfactant or detergent in it - I just don't need that taste in my beer.

How strong are you mixing it for a no rinse? 1oz per 5 gallon?
I use a generic povidone-iodine which is at 10%. I use a little over 1 tbsp for 5 gallons.

If it is a 5% tritable iodine then you would use 2 per 5 gallons. If it is a 15% then you would use about a half tablespoon.

No rinse.
