anyone else friggin love this stuff?? i thought i had given up on drinking czech beers since they all come in green bottles, but our local bottle shop has this beer I've been neglecting to try, but it comes in a brown bottle and is, by far, the best czech pils around IMHO... very clean, phenomenal saaz usage... definitely recommend trying it if you can find it (and i'm guessing that shouldn't be too difficult since we can get it in iowa).

last week I was in my LHBS, the guy was showing me a clone recipe for this beer and talking about how great it was. If you'd like me to get the recipe, I'll try to pick it up next time I'm down there.

that would be nice to see.... i gathered from the website that it's pretty much moravian 2-row and saaz, but not sure how the hops are done.

Hi,
it looked bad with czech beer few years ago. All well known brands were bought by international companies (except the real Budweiser, Budvar:) and the quality had gone...... It was the reason why I started to brew my own beer. Nonetheless, nowadays new breweries were established or re-opened and I have to say that some types are really great. If I can help you (e.g. get some receipts or information) ask me...

Nice to see a Czech on here, what do you think of Zatec? Any other recommendations on beers we might not know too well in the US?

Well... I was wrong. I was talking to my LHBS guy today and he didn't even realize there was a Zatec Pils. His is a recipe he created for an ale, not a pils.

In case you're curious, here's the recipe:

Golden Zatec Ale
A crisp Golden ale with the spicy hop flavor of the traditional Czech Saaz hops. Zatec in the Czech Republic is prized for growing some of the best hops in the world. The spicy Saaz.

Batch: 5 gal
OG 1.047
TG 1.012
IBU 23
SRM 5

3.3 lbs Briess Golden Liquid malt extract
3.0 lbs Briess Golden Dry malt extract

6 oz CaraHell (mash)
6 oz CaraFoam (mash)

1 oz Czech Saaz 4.0% alpha boil 60 minutes
1/2 oz Czech Saaz boil for 20 minutes
1/2 oz Czech Saaz last 2 minutes

1099 Whitbread Yeast

*** Note - I have never made this beer and am not presenting the recipe as such. I do trust my LHBS guy and would be willing to try this at some point.

thanks for the recipe... from what i've read, they used to refer to "Saaz" hops as "Zatec Red", referring to the region of the Czech republic they came from.

Hey to answer the original question, yeah! Good stuff!

I went to Seattle's bottlesoeks and bought em out on Czech pils and Munich helles last week.

I'd drink it over a pilsner urquell.
