I got my first kit in the mail today, but dont plan on brewin for a few days. Am I correct in assuming that I need to store the yeast in the refrigerator?

If you're brewing in a few days, make a starter with it now! No need to store it...let your yeast shag for a couple days and your beer will be all the better for it!

assuming its a liquid yeast in teh kit. if its a dry yeast, no starter is needed, just rehydrate it on brew day.

but if its a liquid yeast, especially a smack pack, you wanna start making a starter like 3 days before you brew.

It is a liquid yeast from an AHB recipe kit. For the starter, does anyone have a link to exactly how to make one? I did a search and you can imagine how many hundreds of results you get from yeast and starter. :mug:

The best starter i ever made was for my weizenbock...

1/4 cup of DME
1 cup of water
1tbsp yeast nutrient (overkill 1 tsp is adequate, bottle was mistyped tbsp instead of tsp)
Boil all these for 10 minutes, cool, pour into sanitized contained, pitch yeast, once done pitch into wort... every once and a while rile the starter a bit to make sure the yeast eats every bit...

then once the fermentation slows in that make double that and pour onto the already made starter... it's a bit much but the littler buggers will start fermenting in less than 10 minutes, guaranteed or your money back (er sorry)....

Anywho, or you can take sparge water (you can't)), or boiled wort from a previous brew and use it to make a starter, i've done this and it works well too...

Instead of reading through hundreds of off-topic webpages, and instead of posting about it? Why not refine your search to something like...

yeast starter "how to" instructions

Six of the first seven hits explain the procedure perfectly well....

Didn't even think about searching that way on the forum, I will check it out. Thanks for the tips.

I have decided to do a starter today following these instructions and I just wanted to make sure that they are correct in saying to put a piece of foil over top and not a stopper with an airlock.

Also, is it ok to use a growler that I have been using to store coins for about a year? Or will that effect the taste?
Thanks again! :mug:

Yes, provided the coins are removed.

A starter will tarnish metal...don't ask how I know this...

haha, yah the coins are removed, and the bottle will be cleaned with sanstar. Cant wait to get off work so I can get started. :tank:

I'm about to start...wish me luck. All kinds of noob paranoia going on...

Good Luck, paranoia is what gets you through the first couple of batches so you can see how things are suppose to go... Then you really do RDWAHAHB!

Never mind, I assumed my kit came with DME but it did not, so I guess I will not be doing a starter this time around....

First lesson learned is, Order extra DME to do starters with...

I do need to sanitize the growler I am using for the starter correct?

Yup.

Everything that contacts the wort/beer after the boil must be sanitized.

you can use LME if that helps. You need to convert the amount from DME to LME...= more LME since it has water in it. I am too drunk to look up the conversions...you can do it...search for posts by homebrewer_99 he says it a lot.

lol I wish I was that drunk at this point. Unfortunately I do not have any extra ingredients as this is my first batch and I didn't know that I would need extra. All I have is what came in the kit. Oh well, I am sure it will turn out fine without a starter.

As long as it isn't a huge beer then you will be fine. I have done many batches witout starters and they were fine.

1 lb grain = .75 lb LME = .6 lb DME...;)
