Yeast Starter

How important is it to make a yeast starter? I've done about 8 extract with specialty grain brews and not once used a starter. I use While Labs liquid ale almost exclusively and let it warm up, shake, pop the top and pitch. In the past i have had some minor issues with full fermentation, but not always.
