I just purchased a 2000ml flask, light DME and a spin plate to assist in starting my yeast. Are yeast nutrients needed as well? I'm getting an extract kit which includes White Labs English Ale.

I will usually add a small amount of yeast nutrient to my starters. I will then add the recommended amount to my wort during the last 10 mins of the boil.
Realistically the wort will have all the items that the yeast need, but it can't hurt to add an additional amount, especially for the trace elements.

Yeast nutrient isn't absolutely necessary, no. It just makes a nice addition. Rest assured, though, your beer will turn out just fine without it.
