I'm wondering what you guys think is the best yeast nutrient available and when is the best time to use it? I've heard good things about BrewVint Yeast Fuel (Nutrient).

Do you find that it's best to add the nutrient to the starter or during the boil?

As a note, I've never used yeast nutrient before, so I'm all ears to your replies.

Thanks!

I will usually put it in the starter. I use the LHBS version of BrewVint, I've been putting in 1/4 tsp into each starter. I always have strong starters and quick starting primary ferments. I wash my yeast so I started using this nutrient to help them wake up.

I use it in the starter and the wort. Yeast cell growth is only limited by O2, Nutrients and Sugar. So long as there are those three elements then they will be fat happy yeast with lots of babies.

I use it in my starters but not in the boil. With a healthy pitch with good water and fermentation temp control I don't see any difference in the boil. (Just my experience to date.)

If you are frugal, you can throw a couple Tbsp of yeast cake into the boil instead of using the nutrient.
