Has anybody used the yeast from Yeast Geek? I was looking for some reviews to see how it worked for people. Thanks for any input.

I've tried a few brews with it. Its pretty great, low clarity though due to its flocculation. There are a few other threads on there which talk about the differences it produces when fermented at various temperatures.

Still can't find any info on it. Also how long does it take to get this stuff in? I figured it would be here in three days...

I did read on that one but I understand this strain mutates quickly so I was curious as to how the yeast geek version is working. I know it was cultured from conan. Just curious really.

I have some on order and Can't wait to get it on the stir plate. Gonna use it on a Galaxy Ipa.

How long have you guys had to wait to get the Conan/YG001? I ordered last week, the site says it ships every monday following your order, and should arrive 3 days later.

I'm holding out hope it will be here today when I get home. I'd like to brew next weekend. Fingers crossed.

Same with me my order should have shipped Monday but I still haven't seen it. Kinda curious about that...

My yeast geek vial came with hardly any yeast!

They claim to send a 250 ml vial, which they did but most of it was water. I am pretty pissed at them. I complained but heard nothing back.

here is a pic after 3 days cold crashing in my fridge. fuzzy pic but the ruler is millimeters and the vial was not more than 15% yeast, measuring from the shoulder.

Wow. I am really starting to regret ordering from them. I ordered to guess I'll have to use both and step up a starter.

Sorry about the delayed response. I was out of town for GABF. Orders that would have been shipped out on Monday 10/14 are being shipped out on 10/21. There was a blog post on the website about it. http://yeastgeek.com/2013/10/10/gabf-delays/ If that timing doesn't work for you, I can issue you a refund. Sorry again about the delay and happy brewing.

Cheers,
Yeastgeek

Just got that. I sure wish he would have put it on the front page so everybody could have seen it. But hopefully I get plenty of yeast.

Wow, that does seem like a small amount of yeast for that size container. I would definitely get a starter going. I think they recommend a 1.030 as opposed to the regular 1.040.

I looked all over the site and missed that post about not shipping this week. Bummer.

Ya it wasn't linked on the home page so it was tough to find. I emailed him back and even linked to this thread to see if he wanted to explain everything. I'm sure he's an extremely busy man. Haven't heard anything back yet.

I have stepped it up twice with light extra runnings. I still don't think it is enough yeast. I am going on vacay and will do it a THIRD time when I get home. $9 plus shipping? aint worth it imo. wish I had cultured from some actual HT! I can't get any unless a kind HBTer wants a trade for Pliny or other RRBC. hit me up!

Ordered some about 2 weeks ago, it came as expected, but due to a mix up at the apartment complex office it sat for 2 days.

I got a similarly small amount of yeast. They claim it should be 100B feels but i highly doubt it. My pan is to use this yeast for my next two beers so I wanted to prepare enough for 4 jars (2 for later). Made a half gallon starter at about non today and it took 12 hours for any signs of activity.

They need to work on getting their cell count higher. I know it's a small company (2 guys I think), but if you say it'll be 100B cells, done send me a half teaspoon of yeast. At this point i just hope i can propagate it enough this weekend for 3 jars worth.

I was forced to pitch the small amount from yeast geek without a starter after the vial a forum member sold me turned out a rancid starter. Growth phase for the 6 gallon batch of headdy clone was extended perhaps 12 hours, but turned out fine even with the colder ferment.

Well, woke up today and have a nice huge krausen. Hopefully it will work out after all.

UPDATE: So I think I probable started off with 20-30B cells, did a 2L starter, stepped up to a 3L (2L was slow to start so I gave it almost 36 hours while the 3L went nuts early and took only 24 hours). In the end I would estimate I ended up with about 500B cells. My 3 mason jars each have about 150-200B cells, and the remainder I ended up putting into 3 old White Labs vials that I had sanitized in case there was something left (each probably has 75B cells).

So while I started off low, I think I have a nice yield after the starters. I only really needed 3 jars (2 planned batches and one for keeping), but having 3 jars and 3 vials just means more yeast for the future.

Does anybody have any comments on attenuation? I heard ECY strain doesn't attenuate as low as Conan supposedly does. People were saying it is probably a later generation of Conan. Any reviews on the yeast? Complaints or impressed?

This sounds like to real deal :ban:

Now, Biobrew, when do you think you will be in production. I've checked your site and am interested, but see you have been almost ready for launch for some time now...

Will your yeast be able to ship with White Labs to a home brew shop or another way? My LHBS was wanting another yeast to add and everybody was interested in your Vermont strain.

Well hopefully it comes along. I imagine that a conan strain produced with white labs quality would be extremely popular. I'm sure some people would want wholesale. I can't wait until you start shipping I have been following since you first posted the news on HBT.

The more companies out there supplying yeast the better for the Homebrewer. Excited to try the YG001 and any new yeasts that you come out with BioBrewer. Cheers!

I am in no way trying to bash ECY, or his company. Just going by the 33+ page thread on Conan experiences and what people have stated about under attenuating... I personally have never tried any of his products. Take it with a grain of salt. In any account, the more companies out there supplying yeast the better for the Homebrewer. Excited to try the YG001 and any new yeasts that come out. Cheers!

For sure. I wasn't saying you are trying to bash ECY. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I just noticed the "This sounds like t[he] real deal, not the ECY which flocs out crystal clear and does not attenuate all the way as Conan does", which indicated to me you thought the ECY029 was not the "real deal" and maybe not Conan, which I indicated I doubt. I get what you're sayin' now though. Some people will always have issues getting certain yeast to attenuate properly, and nothing is ever going to be perfect, especially when dealing with living material. It happens. Really hard to tell if it was a yeast issue or handling/storage/pitch rate.

Cheers right back at ya!

It came yesterday as expected. I got a 2L starter going last night. Nice layer of foam this morning. Gonna brew on Sunday.

Got mine in yesterday with the same small amount of yeast. I will get the starter going tonight and hopefully it takes of quick.

It sounds like their yeast count is way off on a consistent basis. Not necessarily a big deal since only homebrewers that do starters are likely to order their yeast, but still a little disappointing considering the costs.

My jars settled out better than I had expected in the fridge, will post a picture when I get home.

I have heard Giga Yeast gy054 is the Conan strain but i have not been able to try heady topper.I however have used GY054 three times now and it gives off a nice subtle tropical fruit note and is otherwise very clean.Their yeast comes in pouches like Wyeast and each pouch claims to have 200billion cells. My LHBS sells the pouch for 10 bucks.

Update. I brewed a pale ale with an OG of 1.046. I made a starter with the proper amount of yeast and started fermentation at 70 degrees and dropped to 62 when fermentation started. After 3 days the gravity dropped to 1.020 so I rose the temp to 70 again. The next day the krausen was gone and the day after that the gravity was still at 1.020. Stuck I guess....

If you're ever up in Santa Rosa, I can give you a slant of a plated culture harvested from some HT.
