Hi,

Last Friday, I was brewing several batches of beer. I had a Wyeast Liquid yeast which was one of those smack packs. Anyways, the directions say to "Smack" the pack several hours before pitching it, so I did. The only problem is, I didn't come around to brewing it.

My question is: Does this do anything to the yeast inside of it? I plan on brewing again this Friday, will the yeast still be useable?

Did you store the liquid yeast in the fridge after realizing you weren't going to use it? To answer your question, yes it affects the yeast if they weren't stored at low temperature after smacking since they ate up all the wort and slow, they start to die and go dormant (which isn't the best scenario). What is our batch size (5 gallon?) and what is your O.G? (do you aim for a 5%abv beer?) if your doing a 5 gallon batch, a starter is highly recommended to ensure proper yeast pitching rates.

Yes, the yeast is stored in a fridge held at 5*C. I've never done a yeast starter...

You don't NEED a stir plate, but you'll get better growth with a stir plate, and as a result need smaller starters. You can simply shake the starter every time you walk by (change from the "stir plate" options to "shaking" option), but will need a larger starter as a result.

Nope, I use a growler or even a mason jar, add the liquid yeast once the wort is cooled then shake it for 10 min and Voila! Shaking ensure proper oxygenation of the wort so yeast will proliferate much more.
Let it ferment for 24-48 hours then place in fridge for 24 hours, then you can decant the liquid and you can use the slurry in your next batch.

If you plan to brew this Friday, I would do the starter today or tomorrow.

What kind of beer are you planning to brew?
